Macy6 356 Posted October 12, 2013 Do you mean after surgery do they get you up? They gave me a couple hours to come out of my anesthesia hangover and than I was up and walked every couple hours from there. The first couple times pretty much sucked but by the time I was discharged I was lapping the nurses station.
sonya139 95 Posted October 12, 2013 If you're referring to brisk walking, elevating your heart rate, your doctor should give you guidance on that. Surgeons are different on this type of advice. If you're talking about walking to get moving they recommend that as soon as you have surgery.
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted October 12, 2013 This is a great question and is something every VSG should get comfortable with, to help with healing. First, start doing laps around the floor as soon you are able to after waking up from anesthesia. When you get home, try and walk slowly for a block. It will be hard. If you cannot do it, go home, rest, try again the next day. Try and work yourself up to 20 min walks, then 30 minute walks and then hour walks as the days tick by. Take your dog if you have one. Try increasing the pace as some weeks go by. Maybe aim for 1 mile walk and then 2 miles and then 3 miles. I remember after a few weeks, I was out walking 2-3 times a day with my dog for up to an hour at a time. Both my dog and I really enjoyed it. Don't stress too much about time or distance at the beginning. Just be easy on yourself and make progress as you are able to. And do not forget to drink all the time. Always have a water bottle with you as you are out walking. You do not want to get dehydrated. 1 ItsMe2033 reacted to this
red31 40 Posted October 12, 2013 I was told to walk, but don't over do it. I can go back to regular pace at four weeks 1 ItsMe2033 reacted to this
