Pain Level after Surgery

Recommended Posts

My husband is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, October 15th. Can someone fill me in as to how much pain they experienced? He is getting the Lap Band/Sleeve conversion.

Thank you

I had the straight sleeve and had some discomfory that was well-managed by the good Rx in the hospital. I stopped all pain meds two days after returning home.

Let me preface this with: Everyone experiences/feels pain differently, like comparing apples to oranges......

I had no pain.........just a little internal soreness where they made my new sleeve, and that lasted a few days....but I've had some surgeries of the years, broken bones, bruised skull, etc. But if I break a nail, I'm a wimpering baby. :)

That first night I was afraid I'd wake up in excruciating pain, so I took one dose of pain meds around 11 p.m........they sent me home with pain meds, and I never took them.

Again, we are all different, and hopefully you should see a lot of varying replies...Sending good thoughts your way for your hubby!

I have given birth twice to 8+ pound babies and I was in more pain from this then child birth. I did figure out that sleep was key, I napped through out the day for a week plus slept hard at night. Walking was also key to get gas pain out. And I slept in my lazy boy recliner for a month with extra pillows because laying flat or on my side was too painful. Other then that stuff the one thing that saved me from being a total whiney baby was the liquid Vicodin they sent me home with. Don't let him miss any doses or it will be hard.

I am a lucky one who had very little pain. Discomfort, yes, but totally manageable. I only took my painkillers before I went to sleep to knock me out. Other than that, I didn't take pain pills.< /p>

It really depends on how he is with pain. I don't do well with pain. I was in pain for two weeks which is not "typical". I took pain meds religiously and had to get a refill. I was so uncomfortable sitting, laying down, walking....I was pretty miserable, but the pain meds helped. But it did get better day by day.

I'm 2 days less than 2 weeks out from surgery. I stopped pain meds yesterday afternoon. I had some radiating pains in my gut. It's gone now and I feel good. Adapting to my tummy and trying to be a creative cook to get Protein in. I can't wait to make healthy high protein foods. He will be just fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
