Did surgery clear your sleep apnea?

Recommended Posts

I am awaiting approval for surgery and I'm just curious how sleep apnea sufferers pre-surgery are doing post-op. They say it surgery can eliminate it sleep apnea abd frankly being diagnosed with it nearly a year ago was the last straw of co-morbidities for me that prompted my journey to get sleeved. As I grudgingly prepare to put my mask on tonight I'm hoping for a light at the end of the weight loss tunnel.

You know I don't know for sure but I know it's helped immensely. I was just diagnosed in March, I was exhausted all the time, frequently napped etc... I never got to over a 4 hr a night average, I rip it off in my sleep. Post op it was the same and now I rip it off around 1 hour after I fall asleep and my average is horrid. I feel great though, no napping, no exhaustion. I would guess I will be off mine by the time I hit my 1 yr diagnosis anniversary. I'll ask for a second sleep study when I get below 200#.

It can resolve as you lose weight. Me, I like the CPAP sleep, so I have learned to "love" the mask that turns be into a Borg (Star Trek reference).

I was never diagnosed with it but for years as I got fatter my sleep was getting worse and worse. I woke up a lot in the middle of the night and was on sleeping medications. About 3 weeks after all those issues were gone! I always sleep through the night now.

Mine was gone after I dropped 40lbs. My husband says I don't snore, don't gasp for breath & I feel way more rested than I did before.

I just started having sleep apnea a few months before surgery and because I'm a severely light sleeper it would wake me up... In complete panic, terrified and gasping for air. As soon as I lost weight it stopped... The one and only medical condition that convinced me to get VGS.

I have lost 100 lbs but still need my CPAP. I still have hope that someday I can lose enough weight to not need it, but my hope is fading a bit....

My dad lost a ton of weight a few years ago through Weight Watchers and bike riding, like serious hundred mile bikes rides, we followed him an RV when he did a 550 mile one through Colorado.... Anyway, he never got rid of the CPAP, still has it. I hope you beat it and get rid of the dreaded CPAP someday!

I slept with Cpap for 20 years for sleep apnea and I am 4 mo. Post op less 55 lbs and no longer sleep with Cpap. It is great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
