Coffee and hot chocolate

Recommended Posts

Good question. I know my NUT said I'd be able to drink coffee after I heal, but I never thought about sugar-free hot chocolate. (Maybe with a little chocolate Protein Powder? ) I bet that would be fine.

I'm 2+ years post-op, and I still start most mornings with a Protein hot cocoa, made with almond milk (I watch carbs), a scoop of chocolate protein powder, some unsweetened cocoa, and a dash of salt (to cut the artificial sweetener taste). I waited a couple of months before having coffee again because the acidity is hard on your healing sleeve, but I drink coffee most days too.

I have a packet of hot chocolate in a large cup of coffee just about every morning. I think it just depends on how far out you are and how aggressive you want to be in reaching your personal goals. I think for some people, even doing the sugar free alternatives are possible slipping points back to sugar enriched foods. But it all depends upon the person and their history.

Myself, I was never able to do sugar free. It just made me want the real stuff even more, so I just avoided it as much as possible until I reached goal. But others have been doing sugar free for years, so I don't think it would be as much of an issue for them.

As always, moderation is the key, but know that the first 6 to 12 months is going to be your optimal weight loss window. These items will be there for you next winter, too!

With the winter holidays around the corner. I am just curious if anyone still drinks coffee or hot chocolate. Is there tricks?

I drink hot tea every morning now. It's Decaf now. I don't have a problem getting my liquids in though. Eventually I'll add caffeine back in. They just don't want us to get dehydrated. Teavana has amazing teas! Drinking coffee for me was all about the ritual. I love the smell of coffee. I'm sure you could do hot chocolate now. Hershey's unsweetened cocoa, low fat milk, and sweeten with Stevia, microwave, and voila....hot chocolate! :-) best wishes on your journey!!!

I make Protein hot chocolate or protein cap For the hot chocolate I use vanilla unsweetened almond milk and scoop of chocolate protein powder just enough to mix with no lumps then I add hot Water. For the protein Cappuccino I used syntax nectar cappuccino flavor and do the same thing and add my liquid Creamer then I pour a Decaf k cup over it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
