December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

I have a question. Anyone regretting their decision? No one has said anything so I was just wondering.

Lucky - someone else asked that same question last week before her surgery.

QUESTION??? TO THOSE WHO'VE BEEN SLEEVED!!!

- Did you ask to see what your stomach looked like, or if they took pictures etc.

I'm very curious to know what it looks like on the inside!! Like was it fatty, was my liver smaller , the list goes on an on..

I asked about my stomach, and he said it was small, but I had been fasting and on a diet so that was to be expected. He also said my liver was large but not crazy. I have pictures of the inside of my stomach from the EGD before. Really gross to me, but my 6 y/o got a kick out of it lol

Sure. They are called New Whey Protein Shots. There are a bunch of different flavors; fruit punch, apple, blue raspberry, acai berry, watermelon and grape. I buy them at the Vitaminshoppe. Most times I just dump them in Water, but other times like what I'm drinking right now, I've mixed the apple shot with a pack of crystal light lemonade--very delicious and refreshing. I've also mixed the grape with Milo grape squirts and water, and another fav is crystal light raspberry lemonade and the blue raspberry Protein shot, or and hmmm the acai berry and Milo berry. It's the easiest way for me to get my protein in besides my Premier Protein shakes. You kill two birds with one stone, water and protein :-) Nut said it was a very good idea because I sip in over a period of time.

I'm not sure if I got a bad batch but I bought a case of the fruit punch and gagged trying to drink it. It has a horrible, almost rancid after taste. I'm hoping Vitamin Shoppe takes returns as they're certainly not cheap!

In better news, I finally received my nectar protein today and am liking that much better. I mixed the kiwi strawberry with water and crystal light pomegranate cherry. Pretty delish!

I started the sleeve journey in October of 2012 completing 24 weeks of classes. My surgery has finally been scheduled for December 20th. I'm extremely nervous and eating a lot of "last meals." I'm happy to have heard about this group. I look forward to reading all of your posts ????

Have you all been instructed to do a Pre-Surgery Skin Prep?

What about applying Mederma post-op?

I didn't ask for or expected pics but my surgeon did provide my mom with 4 small picks that depicted my original stomach and my liver and along with a pic of my new sleeve and the hiatal hernia repair .... Grosses me out even though it all looks so perfect and clean

It's my 1st night home (spent 2 nights in hospital) and although I'm still taking pain meds I don't need them as often

I was instructed to shower the night before and the morning off with antibacterial soap. Oh and to wash my hair well both time which I thought was weird.

I too am to wash with Hibiclens (Chorhexdine) night before and morning. It's a great idea because it kills all the Staph on our skin and that can cause wound infections.

it's really a good thing as our hair is full of germs and we are always putting our hands in our hair and on our face. That's why we nurses have such dry, red hands from washing them all the time. Lol

Hi everyone! Thanks for the well wishes. Surgery was yesterday morning at 9. I was so tired before that from going to bed so late (work) and getting up so early to get to the hospital. The hospital and staff were amazing. Even though there are closer hospitals, given a choice, I will go back there! Surgery went well. He found out that I have a congenital birth defect! I have a diaphragmatic hernia (hernia/opening in my diaphragm. He said he could only do one or the other so he did the sleeve and said I would need to get the hernia fixed at some point. Due to my previous terrible recoveries I made sure they did all they could do. I took the emend when I got to the hospital, then they gave me of ran under the tongue and patch behind the ear. I still woke up a bit sick but nothing like before and it didn't last long. I have 5 incisions. One on my right side where he pulled out the stomach hurts the most. I was on dilaudid at the hospital. I was in no pain as long as I didn't move! I had some gas pain just in mid chest. I did take a gasx. Not sure if that helped or if it just went away on its own. I peed all night long, almost every hour. I was able to do it all myself but needed help reconnecting the SCD boots. I would get up, go to the bathroom, quick walk down the hall, pee again and then get back in bed. I am very fortunate in that I can drink pretty easily. I have to stop myself because too many sips causes a bit of pain in my chest but I'm even able to drink my shakes. I hated everything they gave me as it was all sugar free. I tasted all of it just to see if I could tolerate it, and I could. When I got home, I made a shake with a dose of Miralax as I want stay on top of that. I'm pretty much staying put in the recliner in my bedroom. I only take the dilaudid when I have pain while not moving. No catheter, no drain. I don't know when I will be able to add the new people to the list. If someone wants to copy and paste the most recent list into a new reply, they can also add the new folks. I hope everyone is doing well on their preops and postops!

So glad to hear your recovery has gone well. What a great idea to use the Mira-lax instead of MOM. I'm so hoping the nausea isn't to bad for me either. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Positive thoughts for Andrew. He posted a topic that he was taken to the hospital and they found a bleed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
