December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

I know most if not all people here agree with the sentiment that anything with collagen Protein is not good. I have to disagree, having extensive experience with a protein deficient family member who was hospitalized for over a year. Nothing that the hospital gave him to increase his protein levels worked. Beneprotein, Juven, etc. I took it upon myself to bring in some Protein Shots. Like mentioned in the quote below, we needed the most concentrated bang of protein per volume. I started with Sunkist Protein shots, also switching up between Proasis, Profect, New Whey, and Dymatize liquid Aminos. Within 6 months, patient's pre-albumin levels rose from severely deficient numbers (3-5) to staying stead around 28-30 (normal) upon release from the hospital. Not to mention that wound healing increased exponentially during the time of supplementation. The NP's and doctors asked me what I was giving him. They were pretty impressed and in fact almost banned me from giving supplements because they weren't on the "approved meds list" - more likely because they weren't happy that they couldn't solve the protein deficiency themselves ;) Now I'm not a nutritionist by any means, but I've seen proof that protein shots DO WORK (in myself as well when I had a recent minor surgery). So my point is, do not disregard any sort of concentrated Liquid Protein just because there is hydrolyzed collagen in it. As long as the product contains sufficient aminos, it is a good protein, IMO. New whey is a good one. Dymatize Elite shots are excellent as well and have no mention of collagen (just whey/casein). Dymatize Liquid Aminos taste amazing and have 25g protein in 50ml. Definitely a good protein bang in small volume. Another mention - Cytosport whey isolate drinks. Comparable to Isopure Zero Carb but taste WAY better and cost less. 32g whey isolate per 16oz bottle. I start my LRD tomorrow. Game on... I am definitely using all the above mentioned - now and after surgery as well. Just my 2 cents and hope this helps!

I have been taking the 2oz bottles of Dymatize Elite shots from GNC. They were on sale for $1.97 a bottle. Easy to take and a great way to get protein in. The Protein Shakes can be as much as 10-14 oz in a bottle with 25g protein. Ur if ur newly sleeved good luck trying to drink that much. So for me, the little bottles work out good. I did put a call in to my doctor to make sure those were ok. Still waiting to hear bak tho.

I had my surgery on the 3rd. I have had the usual gas pains but nothing all that bad. I also had an issue with peeing after surgery and was sent home last night with a catheter. If I didn't have this stupid thing in this recovery would be a breeze! I guess I was slightly combative when I woke up post op lol. I kept telling the nurse I was having having a heart attack. Im glad to be home resting, but I will be sooo happy once this catheter is out!

I am so bloated and gassy too! I feel yucky!

Hi everyone. I started my two week pre-op diet yesterday and I'm having trouble with gas, bloating, and diarrhea. My surgery is scheduled for 12-18 and I'm really trying to follow this diet, but this is very uncomfortable. Anyone else having issues?

Hey SoPeachy28. Its nice to know someone else is feeling the same way. The gas and rolling bowels have not been fun. I call my doctors office today and they advise me I could try to add some Fiber to to my Protein Drinks but only half of the directed amount. Or Try Gas-X. The diarrhea has gotten better thank goodness. I hope it gets easier as the days pass because this is uncomfortable. Also I'm so glad i found this forum. It's nice to know others are walking the same steps and all of you guys are great with advice. Thanks everybody

WOW that's great I hope it's gets better for me. I haven't weighted myself yet so I don't know where I stand until I go to the hospital to get weighed.

Question for you all....

What are you taking in your hospital bag? This may have already been posted, but I am getting ready to pack and not sure what I should take.

I know that hospitals are all different in what they allow you to bring, but just a good basic listing would be super helpful...

Thank you all in advance!

-------------------------------------------------

I took a small bag, toothbrush, toothpaste, my eyeglasses, Vitamin e lip balm, gas x strips, cell phone/charger, buddy pillow for my stomach, change of under garments, a bra with no underwire was very helpful when I checked out. I wore the same clothes home that I wore to the hospital. I wore their gowns instead of PJs.

Make sure you wear some slides instead of shoes with laces.

PJ's

Gas x

Slippers

Sports bra

Chap stick

Phone charger

Comfy going home clothes

Pillow for the ride ..

Already have my bag packed and ready lol

Only add is maybe tom's or other pull on's for your walking.. I find it difficult to walk in my slippers, and do not want to have to tie tennis shoes

also toothbrush and toothpaste

if you have long hair a hair tie or braid hair prior to surgery to not worry about it.

Yes the hair tie was a great idea too. I put my hair in two ponytails...worked out quite well that way. I also found it was better to walk in the hospital socks because they are made with the grips in them already. Slippers can be slippery on the bottom sometimes and those floors are ultra waxed

Hi. I just found out about this thread:-) Surgery is 11 Dec (Wednesday). So excited! On day 3 pre-op and the headache has finally stopped. Feel pretty weak though, otherwise, I'm so ready to get this over with!

I think I captured a few that weren't here....LuminousLife, I thought I read an email that your date was dec. 5. Could you confirm if you are the 3rd or the 5th?

Hope all of our Dec. 3 sleevers are doing well.

Thanks to everyone for their messages. I am glad to be back in front of a computer and preparing for the start of the liquid diet...and getting very excited to see those pounds being lost on the pounds lost board! Hope to see you there soon!

Just saw this now. I had my sleeve on the 3rd. Recovering at home now. Pain gets more manageable every day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
