Do you use ground beef or like sliced beef?

Ground beef. I use a dehydrator along with this gizmo.

I've used regular sliced beef and turkey breast. I bought some really lean ground turkey yesterday (the beef was too expensive - waiting for a sale). I'm going to make some ground turkey Jerky tomorrow, fingers crossed:)

I bought the Nesco dehydrator and the Nesco Jerky gun. I make two pounds of jerky every 2 weeks for my pups (okay, me too!) It is soooo good. My stepson's friends all thought it tasted like store bought.

If you use the jerky gun, it has attachments like a frosting tip. I use one tha thas 2 flat slits. I use 2 pounds of lean ground beef (it has to be very lean meat) and 2 packs of Nesco jerky flavoring in original. Using the flat tip, the ground beef comes out shaped like slices of steak and even has that texture. No one can believe it when I tell them it is ground beef!

They also have a round tip that makes it come out like a slim jim. Those are less chewy but as tasty. The pups and I prefer the flat tip (that's what they said, really!)

You can use the packets of cure (added salt for the jerky to keep longer) or use just the flavoring without the cure and keep it in the fridge. I have never made it without the cure so I don't know the exact flavoring of the packets without the added salt.

It is really, really tasty and only takes about 3-1/2 hours to make!

Thanks to this thread, my husband and I are sitting here watching a movie, munching on a little Jerky. I had no idea how much Protein it has in just one ounce. What a good find! Thanks for starting this thread.

How much meat do you start with in weight, and how many pounds does it yield?

I start with 2 pounds of lean ground beef and I have no idea how much it yields. It fills 3/4 of a 6 cup Rubbermaid bowl. I am presleeve and have only recently purchased a food scale, so have never measured. If it is just me and the pups (2 large german shepherds) snacking on them, it lasts 2 weeks.

This is exactly how I make mine. The only difference is, I add a little cayenne pepper to the original flavoring and I DON'T share with the dogs ;).

Here in New Mexico my favorite Jerky place makes Carne Adovada beef jerky that is sprinkled with red chile, Mexican oregano, and seasoning. Out of this world!

Lol. Have you tried the other flavors? They have some spicy and peppery ones. I haven't tried them but saw them on the Nesco site.

I have tried all of the Nesco flavors, they came with my Jerky gun. Original is still our favorite.

Oops pressed send too soon! Lol Anywho, the Jerky was fab. I seasoned it with steak seasoning for this batch. I scored it for easy cutting before putting in in the oven. Definitely easier to chew for those who don't like meat stuck in their teeth and easier to digest. Gonna make beef for the next batch. You can also freeze individual servings. Will definitely be a go to for post op diet and to keep in my purse for quick Protein on the go.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
