First day/night in hospital?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering how you were the first night. I am trying to figure out if my husband should bring the kids or wait until day 2. Any suggestions? My surgery is scheduled for noon.

I havent had this surgery yet but have had about a dozen others. I would wait, No need to scare them with tubes and drains--although there will be some, but maybe less paraphanalia the next day. How old are they?

9,12,14,15. They don't know I'm having surgery so I worry they may need to see me. But if I am totally out of it, I don't want to scare them. Getting very nervous.

Thursday is a very busy day and night. But my husband may be able to bring them for a little bit. I feel bad for him, more to do then he can imagine. Lol. Thank GOD for baseball and football by's this weekend.

My mother had a total hysterectomy when I was 14--a long time ago when they didn't have laparoscopy. I did all the housework and cooking for months. Kids are tougher than you think!

wait, don't rush it...My kids don't like or are not use to seeing me sick and not up and around......they can wait, so they don't worry.

Are you going to tell them? I had no drains, my 13-year old would have been fine around us the day of surgery. All we were was very sleepy and it hurt to drink. But it wasn't any big deal, like no excruciating, screaming pain or blood or whatnot. Kinda like being in bed with the flu or something.

Same here as gamer girl no drains and very little pain. Just the discomfort drinking.

The day after my surgery was the worst! I wouldn't let my hubby bring the kids to see me. But by the 2nd day post op, I looked and felt better and they came to pick me up from the hospital.

I would wait til day 2 if possible. I was so out of it on matey first day. I went in around 730 am, didn't get to my room until 11am. Slept until 4p.

No I'm not telling them, they don't need to worry about me. I will have a cath for one day and drain until I leave the hospital. I don't think it's going to be possible for them to come tomorrow anyway. 2 of the 4 have practice.

i was only required one night in the hospital... my suggestion is don't bother bringing them up! my husband and a few of my friends came to visit and i was asleep 90% of the time they were there. i was all sedated and kept dozing off during the conversation.

All I did was sleep. I even told my husband to leave because I couldn't stay awake to talk to him. The first night for me was rough. Threw up and some dry heaves. Day 2 I felt a little better later in the day, and was up walking but they still kept me the 2nd night. By the 3rd day, I was ready to go! Up, showered, dressed, walking the halls, etc...

Each child is different. You're the best judge if they should come up.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
