A hair loss theory

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 months post-op and my hair started falling out in handfuls about a month ago. I never drank Protein Shakes. I live in Greece and docs here don't recommend them. They want us getting our Protein from our food. I get about 400-500 calories a day. I started taking collagen however and the Hair loss decreased considerably - I even had some new hair coming out. I hope this continues because I never had much hair to begin with

I'm really scared about losing my hair. It has taken me a long time to get my hair this long and I don't want to lose it

I wonder if Biotin will help. I'm going to do some research.

I'm no expert, I'm only 6 months post-op, but I've been thinking about this whole hair loss ordeal that so many WLS people go through. Mine has been very minimal thus far, just a very small amount of extra shedding. This was a very big fear of mine in the beginning because my hair is rather fine to begin with.

Is it possible that a lot of people start losing their hair at the 3-6 month mark because that is when we stop drinking Protein shakes? I've never stopped and I wonder if that has helped. I faithfully take my Vitamins also. I don't take oral Biotin at all. I've been using Organix Shampoo with Biotin and collagen since early post-op.

Like I said, I'm no expert and my hair could starting falling out by the handfuls tomorrow!

I JUST FOUND THIS. CHECK FOR YOURSELF. THERES LOTS OF INFO ONLINE. :-)

Biotin:

Biotin, otherwise known as Vitamin B-7 is an essential nutrient that can be found naturally in foods such as eggs, brewer’s yeast, cauliflower and cucumber to name a few. Biotin supports carbohydrate, Protein and fat metabolism and it is not common to have a Biotin deficiency. Many of us consume plenty of Biotin in our diets naturally, but it has also been shown that taking higher doses of Biotin in supplement form can greatly benefit the hair, skin and nails.

Biotin for Hair Growth:

Biotin has been called 'hair food' and rightly so, since one of the effects seen most often is an increased rate of growth in the hair when taking biotin supplements on a daily basis. The magic number seems to hover around 5000 mcg a day, with the daily consumption being very important. Being inconsistent with taking biotin will definitely vary your results. It's also important to let your clients know that Hair growth will not happen over night. You will most likely see results after about a month or so. Biotin has also been shown to increase nail and eyelash growth and can be a great treatment for people who are suffering from eczema.

Does Biotin Make all Hair on the Body Grow?:

The question I get most often from my clients is, "Will the rest of the hair on my body grow too?". Thankfully, no. Unlike the hair on our head, the hair on our body is only programmed to grow to a certain length. This is what thankfully allows us to avoid having to cut and style our clients arm hair.

Biotin Side Effects:

Anyone who is pregnant or trying to become pregnant should avoid taking Biotin or consult their doctor before doing so. Biotin has also been shown to decrease the effectiveness of some heart and anti-seizure medications. Make sure to check with your clients and see what medications they are taking before suggesting Biotin.

I started Biotin a month pre-op and have been taking it daily since my May 2, 2013 surgery. I also drink a Protein shake (or two) daily. Neither has helped my Hair loss. My shower drain is covered after a shower and my scalp is prominent when it didn't used to be. Thin is wonderful (getting) but balding is so discouraging. Is there anyone out there who has had their hair start to grow back? When might one expect it to return? Hopeful.

Oh no so sorry! My bariatric support group nurse said that our hair will grow back. I've gone through phases where I lost a lot of hair due to extreme stress. I don't have thick hair. I cut my hair into a blunt bob to help is look thicker. I hope that is somewhat helpful.

I have heard that the hair loss slows over time. I'm a year out and mine is still falling out by the handfuls. I take Vitamins and drink Protein. I haven't tried Biotin. I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm thinkin like all Vitamins it only will work if it's good quality, long term, the large amounts they recommend. I wish you the best! Everything my Wellness doc says. S Protein intake should be from 90 to 110 grams for women daily. I'm working my way up that way. I wish you the best!!!

LoryLosesXS - It seems to be all over the board in terms of how much hair is lost, when it starts growing back, etc. I guess we just have to cope with it and be grateful for the other health benefits we are experiencing. Your hair looks cute in your pic!

I appreciated the compliment. I'm nervous myself too. I've been warned to get in enough Protein, so that's my daily goal along with the caloric intake. :-). What I just decided to do as of now is keep a visual of what I want my hair to look like, stay like, and look at it daily. Retrain my mind to think only positive in this avenue as I have done in so many others. We are what we think about....thoughts are powerful...this I know.......so....I'm going with that. :-). Bet to all!!!

Biotin will help your hair to grow and keep it in good condition but it will not stop Hair loss. I am 4 months post op and have been very fortunate so far. I have been taking the biotin to keep my hair in good shape but I don't expect it to stop the loss. I have been using a Shampoo called Revita that can be ordered on Amazon it is a little pricey but worth it. My hair stylist has been to seminars on this shampoo and swears by it. He said he has clients with pattern baldness that have regrown hair. He wasn't pushing product on me I went to him about it. This shampoo is a follicle stimulator so my thought was this. If I am always losing hair on a normal basis and then it picks up from the surgery then if I use the shampoo now it will speed up the growth of new hair to replace what is being normally lost and help to keep back the thinning. I am seeing new growth where it had previously thinned prior to surgery. Basically I am looking to balance it all out. I guess we will see how it turns out. I hope that made sense.

I am almost a year out and am still losing hair, but I have had some thyroid issues that I'm sure has contributed to it. That said, I also see a lot of regrowth, it is just short still, and so not very helpful yet. I was looking at some old pictures, comparing the heavier me to the lighter me, and I was instantly drawn to how thick and healthy my hair used to look preop! But the weight loss has definitely been worth the Hair loss.< /p>

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
