A little over a month out and just dealing with EMOTIONS

Recommended Posts

My name is Jeannette, and I got the gastric sleeve on 8/21/13. Having some problems with low blood pressure (likely hydration issues) but weight loss is trucking along. I'm a single mother of two small girls, ages 3 & 7. I'm having a hard time with my emotions though, never really realized just how much I depended on food to make me "feel better"--I totally used it as a crutch, was an emotional eater, and am now a big mess. I don't know that I have a big story (or at least one that I can type quick) but basically, was 278, insurance paid for my surgery, and I didn't have to fight that thank God. I did have to do 6 months of the Kaiser protocol with their nutritionist etc. I just decided, especially with the girls that enough was enough--my insides didn't match my outsides--inside was a sexy beast waiting to be free, the outside was a scared fat girl who was punishing herself for a life of poor choices by eating herself to death. I didn't have high blood pressure or diabetes, was generally fat and "healthy". But wow, these emotions are something else. Can't wait to meet folks who have been there and "done that." Thanks for having me!

That first month is the worst for emotions because your hormones are all out-of-whack from the surgery. Things do get better. But it IS important to get emotional eating under control. In a few months, you WILL be able to eat more - and you are likely to go back to emotional eating unless you get that habit in check now. Find a support group. Go see a therapist. Do whatever it takes to help you dump the emotional eating NOW, and then find a way to maintain. Support is key. Hopefully, your Kaiser has a support group for this sort of thing. If not, then seek one out.

Hi Jeanette. I just want you to know that everyone has these days, but what you need to look at is all the good & positive. I don't think that anyone who has weight issues did not count on food like you did, its normal, instead of feeling down on yourself, pick your head up high and be proud of yourself you are doing great, When I get that emotion to food, I go for a walk or just walk away from the food and do something for yourself. I am here for you and to support you. This is hard, but the prize will be so well worth it. Hang in there. Lisa

Boy oh boy was I feeling that way last night. That has been my habit for years, late nite eating, just for the company. It's gonna be a tough one for me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
