I'd like to hear from Hypoglycemics, please

My major health concern is my hypoglycemia. I am quite learned in how to control it with a high-Protein diet, eating every 2-3 hours, etc. (I've had it for 30 years!) And having to eat Protein (with the usual associated fat) so often has contributed to my consistent weight gain over the years. I'm not an emotional eater, except that I am very emotional about avoiding low blood sugar!!

I am quite sure that the band will allow me to regulate my blood sugar without so much food intake and will keep the frequent hunger pangs at bay.

Am I on the right track here?

How has the band affected your hypoglycemia and your ability to control it?

How do you normally control it, with protein or with sugar (carbs)?

Your input is really appreciated.

I don't know if you are insulin. I am learning the hard way of how to bring up my blood sugars. I use to eat something like Cookies or a candy bar to raise my blood sugar. I tried to eat a few Cookies and milk in the middle of the night when I was having a low..like the old days. NO Way! The band was tight and I throw up.

Sooooooooooo...I am now only relying on Gluscose Tablets. If my blood sugar is low and I want to bring it up to normal I chew a couple of the tablets. One B-D Glucose Tablet has 5 grams of glucose...it probably will raise your blood sugar up 25mg. So..if I am now to 45 I eat a couple or three.

I think I am borderline hypoglycemic. Sugar or carbs in any form is the last thing I want when I get shaky like that. I want MEAT....like I am STARVING!! I remember after my GTT I stopped at a steakhouse and ordered the biggest steak they had.

I had hypoglycemia growing up (it runs in my family) and I was lucky enough to grow out of it for the most part but if I just eat sugar it comes back (duh) and because I'm on an ACE inhibitor now its back. My doc says that after I get banded I can at least lower my ACE inhibitor dosage.

But I found that one Vitamin helps: Chromium. It can help regulate blood sugar levels.

Also prevention is the best cure-- don't let it get low if you can avoid it. Sip on half of a low cal Protein shake every couple of hours if you need to! I found that frequent little high Protein Snacks used to help me out before.

And I know a lot of hypoglycemic's have one type of sugar they respond to better than others. For some its fructose. For me its lactose. Knowing that when you do get all low and shaky can help rather than having to take a bunch of glucose -- unless of course you like glucose.

Also watch and see if you have any dietary triggers. Caffeine should be avoided. So should sweetners if thats a potential cause. Sometimes sweetners can trigger the response. Maybe it is a certain food...

And if you do use glucose, add in some protein with it so two hours later you aren't going through it again!

Band eating and the band itself (avoiding binges, eating right, small healthy meals) sounds like the way to go. Losing weight is a positive thing for the body and insulin and all that.

I am or was hypoglycemic. I was very worried about that with the band and oddly enough, I haven't had a really bad attack in the past year. A couple of time I had to pop a glucose tablet, but I really am not having a problem with it.

      Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

        We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.


        This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
