Hey everyone! I am 8 days post-op and still struggling with pain control. I was just curious how long everyone else needed narcotics for pain and when they switched to Tylenol? When I take the tylenol I am feeling hardly any pain relief. Maybe I have a low pain tolererance, I don't know....

I took pain meds for over a week. Then I started talking half of the Loritab for pain. I never did take Tylenol.

I'm post op day 8 also and I'm still taking the pain meds although not as frequently. I thought I would be off them by now. Sounds like it may be normal. I think there was an expectation that the healing process would be much faster. Hang in there!!

Thanks for the responses. That makes me feel better. My surgeon typically does not give out narcotics for pain control but I requested it. Well my norco is out and I called the office for a refill to get me through a few more days and they said if I am still hurting that bad that I need to come in for an appt because something is wrong if I am still hurting this bad on day 8 (this was on voicemail). When I got the vmail it was after 5 so I think I will just call today and be seen if they think I need to. Im pretty sad because I am starting to feel weird about my surgeon's staff but I just got surgery :( oh well I will keep you guys updated!

What type of pain are you having? My pain was associated with gas pains killing my back and some discomfort in the port area.

I don't have gas oain anymore. Its sharp, shooting pain at my port site that comes and goes. And when I stand or move the port hurts and feels like it's being ripped out. I feel likw this is normal pain from what I have read here...

I was put on liquid Hydrocodone and did call for a refill which I was given. After a week I started just taking it at night so I could sleep without waking up to the pain. Where is your pain at? After the first week, I had pain at the port site. I thought there was an issue. I did go in and was told that everything was fine, there was just some Fluid under the port site that would slowly get absorbed. I was told to put a heating pad on the area which would make it feel better and help with the healing. Good luck!!

Thanks Lynn, that may be what's going on I suppose ( I posted my pain description right before you posted). Better safe than sorry and I'll just go get it checked out.

That does sound like what I was going through. Also be very careful when you cough or sneeze. Hold on tight to your port site. I sneezed and thought someone was trying to rip out my port, then it hurt for several days. The heating pad helped.

Try resting with a heating pad on that area. Take some Extra Strength Tylenol before you sit down to rest. See if that helps. I really do feel your pain!! It sounds like it is just irritated. Mine was really swelled up and the heat helped that too.

My doctor have me a prescription for Lortab (liquid Vicodin with acetaminophen), with two refills. I used it for a good two weeks, and sporadically during the third week. I also had my gallbladder removed at the time of surgery, so that may have been an additional pain hurdle. Honestly, recovery from this surgery took a lot longer than I expected, and I was really glad to have the narcotic pain meds. That being said, I don't think 8 days is unreasonable at all.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
