Food makes me sick.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am new to this site. I have been having some problems and decided to see if there was a community out there with similar issues. I got my band done 2 weeks ago. I did liquids the first week and was then moved to pureed foods. For the past few days i have been sick to my stomach almost constantly. I can't get in what I need because the sight, smell and thought of the food I need to eat makes me want to vomit. Though I never actually throw up, I have the constant feeling and lump in my throat like I'm going to. Protein shakes are basically out of the question (at least the ones I have), it's the same with the food, it makes me sick. It's so hard to eat. I have like a constant upset stomach and some pain as well.

I went to the surgeon today and she said either they could try to access the port and take some of whatever liquid is there out or to go back on liquids for the weekend. I'm back on liquids, but still feel the same at this point.

Has anyone else had a similar situation? Anything would help.

Thank you,

Laura

Hey Laura and welcome. I didn't have any of your symptoms, but are you staying hydrated? Is Water making you have the sensation to vomit as well? I wonder if your surgeon tried you on some anti-nausea meds if that would get you past this issue until your swelling goes down and you're body gets accustomed to eating again? I would ring your surgeon if you can't stay hydrated, decrease urination, or your symptoms worsen. Best wishes and a speedy recovery :)

The most important thing is to stay hydrated. The best Protein Shakes I found were the slim fast low carb, 20 mg of Protein. I get terribly nauseous if I eat too fast. Just eat really, really slowly (and I'm talking about a minute or two between bites) and take very small bites. Stay in contact with your surgeon as they are the only ones that can really help you.

I drink throughout the day and I don't get dehydrated. I am having trouble with getting my Protein in which I know is not good. I found this Atkins shake that's 15mg of Protein that I can tolerate for now. I don't eat fast either, I make sure that I eat slow and don't eat and rink at the same time. What I honestly think it is is that it's the purreed foods. I don't feel like I'm eating anything and I've never liked eating yogurt or anything similar because I wasn't chewing or anything. I started to eat some soft foods just to see if it's any better and it is, but I have to talk to the nutritionist about all this...I don't want to mess myself up.

Thank you guys!

As you are staying hydrated, instead of plain Water or flavored water, try the Special K Protein water. An extra 5 grams of protein with your water!

The nausea and everything is gone and I'm on to mushie foods. The nutritionist said it may have been stress since your muscles tense and your stomach restricts more. It makes sense with everything going on at that point. Glad its done. Thanks everyone!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
