Today I had a couple chicken strips and 5-6 French fries and for the first time since surgery I have some mild heartburn, I am 3 weeks out. I had a very bad hiatal hernia and haven't had any heartburn at all since surgery. Does heartburn always indicate a slip or dialated pouch? My follow up is in 10 days but I a little worried. Newbie nerves I guess.

Yep. I have been on full solids for about a week.

Not had any problems with anything I have eaten to this point. I was on Clear Liquids for three days, full liquids for 4 days, soft/mushies for 7 days and then transitioned into solids per my doc. Although now that you've voiced concern I am freaked out.

I was told fried food was hard to tolerate, also, how do you calculate your Protein intake?

I hadn't had that heavy of a meal in weeks so I think my body is just a little mad at me! Drinking warm tea and not eating tonight. I use my fitness pal to calculate Protein, carbs and calories

There's a big difference between heart burn and acid reflux. I too have been transitioning into solids and have had some heartburn issues but its just my body telling me to take it easy. I used to have acid reflux terribly so I know the difference. It seems to be reflux that is the signal of a slip or other issues, not heartburn. From what I have read about the band, certain food allergies or intolerances become more prevalent post band than before. For example, I knew pre band that wheat was one of my triggers for reflux. I can tell post band that anything that is not gluten free causes me some irritation. Its all about finding what works for you. You may just be experiencing some of your own intolerances. I could very easily see how chicken strips and fries could cause issues, fried or not. Don't fret about or worry about being on solids. You're doing what your doc told you and that's what counts. You might just kick it back a notch and experiment a little more. Eat one good at a time and see how your body reacts so you can narrow down what to eat and what not to eat.

i agree with miss ...kinda early for solid foods but oh well

i suggest going on easier foods as you are still early out from surgery...

its a process and each dr is different...for example on my week 3, i was on mush (oatmeal refried bean, etc) no solids til week 4...and i also had a hernia repaired.....i say dont be in a hurry to eat...and def choose better foods when you do eat...nothing healthy fried.sure does taste good..but seeing scale go down tastes better

hang in there

you will do fine

I agree fried crap was dumb. I won't make the mistake again. Guess it was a moment of weakness.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
