When does it become fun?

Recommended Posts

I have been very good about exercising. In fact every day since a week out I have been walking/very light jogging at least 30 minutes on the treadmill, though now I am doing 2 miles a day. Everyday. I hate it. I feel great when I am done. It gives me a lot of energy. But when will I get up in the morning and actually say "Hey I can't wait to walk today"?

Maybe walking isn't your thing. I HATE the treadmill...I don't mind walks outside, but there are only about 4 fit months here in Wisconsin for that sort of thing. The only excercize I can stand is swimming/water jogging.

Have you thought about joining the local YMCA or Fitness club...maybe even Curves?

The YMCA also has pilate's, yoga, aerobics, and many other classes available to try :( My Y actually started a bariatric Water work out at 5:30am for large people that don't want to excercise in front of skinny people. They encourage you to even wear shorts and a T-shirt if it makes you more comfortable. You could also ask your Surgeon's program coordinator to recommend other options.

From what I've been told over and over again from the Doc and nutritionist, that it's most important to find an excercise plan you will like. So keep looking :)

Is a personal trainer in the area? I found that years of hating exercise, not seeing the results I felt I deemed due to the effort so quiting wasnt because I hated exercise it was because I hated what I was doing and not doing enough of the right stuff.

Cardio is great, but the results are in the weights. weight training with an expert has given me muscles I never knew were there and if there not noticable in my body. I work out 3 days wkly with her and thats enough I get the social and the workout together. It is a one on one session 1.5hrs mon, tues, thurs. I find that enough for my lifestyle and I see great results without daily workouts.

I would love to join a gym or have a trainer but at the moment it is just not feasible. Our budget is very tight pretty much down to pennies. Maybe in a year or two that could be an option but just not right now. The treadmill was a huge splurge and was gotten because I need to have some sort of exercise. I don't like the videos so that is out lol. I do hope when it is nicer out I can go outside. I will say I do enjoy walking outside more than on the darn treadmill but with the blistering cold/snow/ice thats not working so well. I guess I was just hoping someone would say that one day I would just wake up and enjoy it lol.

Change your routine, Am to Pm, and as already said jogging or walikg may just not be your thing. I absolutely hated it too and realized it was the whole "treadmill thing" Get out and walk or jog, and if the weather is crappy, it will wait till tomorrow, just not next week.

2 years post op

at my 3 times adjusted goal

210 pounds lost

Life is good!

Jackal I know if I don't do it in the morning I will find every excuse in the book to not do it in the pm. I definitly plan to walk outside once the weather is better but now there is an ice storm outside. Ideally I want to start to enjoy this treadmill thing so I can get that workout in the morning and then when the weather gets better either walk outside or treadmill in the am and then take my kids for a walk or bike ride in the pm. I also walk on my lunch break at work which is much more enjoyable because I have someone to walk with.

I did get my workout done this morning and it was not as bad as yesterday. I think I need to try and tivo some shows and then watch them whie I am walking. Maybe that will help pass the time. I have found that the days I jog it passes the time a bit quicker as I jog 60 seconds and walk 90. The 90 seconds seems a lot shorter when I know I have to follow it with jogging lol.

Just stay focused, you will get there. You will also find that the more you lose, the easier it will get. The more I personally lost, and the more results I saw in myself, the more fired up I got, and it got easier.

I learned this trick a while ago and try to do it when on the treadmill to kill 2 birds with one stone.

treadmill at incline 10-12 as high as you can go, at a slow pace like 3-4 walk and get stready first trust me, your heart rate will soar and you wont giggle like running.

2-3lb weights do some arm work. lateral pulls, bi-cep curls, tri-ceps anything you can do but do 3 sets of 15 when thats easy do higher weights.

I can tell you from experience that when you see results is when you may start to like it. It is boring I know, and cant even imagine doing it at 5AM holy crap, dont think I can potty at 5 AM let alone treadmill!! I am proud of you for even getting up that early and doing it. I go to the trainer at 9 or 10 depending on the day. I've turned into a dinker since I left my job, what will I be like next month when I am working!!! hew, CRABBY!!!

I understand the snow and stuff as I live in MT and the ice is not your friend!

Do you feel better today? Just tell yourself you love it! ok, if you cant lie to that level, tell others you do and see if that helps. lol

Yeah the 5 am is not bad once you get used to it. I have to be out of the door by 7:10 and I have two little kids to get ready and drop off at school and daycare and I have to get to work by 8! I get a lot of things set up the night before (lunches packed, clothes set out, that kind of thing). I will have to give the weights thing a try. Right now I only walk at like a 3.2 and jog at 4.0 until I go two miles which for me is not too bad considering my weight.

I just did some walking on the high incline and oh boy was that a workout. I only did it like the last three minutes of my walking and it was tough. Definitly something I will have to build up to.

Hey Babygrl, you may never get to that point were you actually love working out but you will get to a point when it becomes a neccessity in your life. I have been working out for at least 9 years straight and I do actually love it. It didn't happen overnight and prior to 9 years ago, I would workout occassionally.

I exercise to help maintain and possibly lose some more weight (still trying to decided how much more I want to lose). It's hard some days and other days I love it. I am a morning person so I get up at 4AM and arrive at the gym at 5AM and workout until 6:20AM. I do love the way it makes me feel afterward but sometimes before and during it hard.

Stay encourage and no that what you are doing is for your health and your heart. Eventually, it will be like second nature to you.

I got sick of the treadmill and a fitness freak told me to just stop and do free weights for awhile. She said building up my muscles would make the treadmill easier later, and switching around keeps things interesting.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
