How ofter do you weigh

Recommended Posts

I have 4 more days on liquids. As some of you may have read previously I was banded in 2011 but have gained back about 15. Finally gave in and called doc who has me in shakes and I see him on Monday. Ok. .. I lost over 5 last week weighed today and gained 3 ! What's up with that? So how often does everyone weigh? I know I shouldn't look every other day but love to see it go down. Motivation. But the other side is when I gain. Now depressed. Help plz.

I weigh once every couple of weeks. Otherwise, I go on a scale driven roller coaster ride, which I just can't do anymore. Been there, done that. This time around, I know that as long as I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, the weight will come off.

If you are drinking only liquids, then that 3 pound gain is only temporary. There are many variables when it comes to our bodies. You may have been retaining some extra Water? Hard to know, but my suggestion is to stay off of the scale. Focus more on how you feel, stick to your program, and the scale will reflect that. But not every other day! :P

Ditto what mrsto posted...

Weighing too frequently can set you up for unnecessary negative feelings about what the scale says. Not weighing too often allows for continuing to feel good about what your efforts are every day. Also, small fluctuations in your weight are normal, but many can become discouraged by seeing them, and then question what they might be "doing wrong".

I do my best every day to make good meal choices and exercise. Weighing myself every 2 weeks or so allows me to see progress without the self doubt or negative feelings about a lack of progress.

Do the right things, and the weight will come off. Another thought...my band and my weight loss journey have served to allow me to acquire a life skill that eluded me for many years...patience!

Best wishes...

Losing weight and losing fat are two completely different things. It's nice to see the scale go down of course but usually quick weight gain or loss is simply the body ridding or absorbing fluids. It's nearly impossible to lose more than 1/2 lb of fat in one day unless you're a marathon runner or ride a century bike ride.

Some types of food or sodium can cause the body to eliminate fluids or absorb fluids. Carbs and sodium can cause these wild weight fluctuations. If you're hyper-sensitive to seeing the scale jump around on a daily or weekly basis maybe you shouldn't look. But if you understand the reasons for these fluctuations and don't take them personally, weigh yourself daily like many of us do. I weigh morning and night.

Just remember that you need to consume 3500 more calories than you burn to gain one lb/fat. Or, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you consume to lose one lb/fat. If you eat 1000 calories a day and burn 2000, you could be losing approximately 1/3 lb/fat a day. But, if it's your TOM or you consume a snickers bar or a bowl of cheerios or 2000mg of sodium, your body could retain 1-3 lbs of extra fluids. It's not fat weight but your scale can't tell the diff. Hope this wasn't too lengthy and helps?

Honestly, i hop on everyday..... BUT, the number really doesn't phase me at all, whether is up or down (ok, maybe I get a little happy if its down from the day before) BECAUSE I go by how good I feel and how my clothes are fitting me. I find that clothes are a better gauge to mark our success.

Right now I'm jumping on the scale once a week. I think as I progress that may get spaced out to every two weeks. In the past, I've always been discouraged by the numbers on the scale and given up when I get frustrated. I want to avoid that this time around :) So, my focus is good food choices, a better exercise routine and how my clothes fit on me!

Your weight can fluctuate every day by at least 3 to 9lbs. If you are going to be a scale watcher then you have to get over being disappointed when the numbers go up. Water weight and other things will only make the scale go up. You have to be patient if you are going to weigh everyday because if not you will make yourself crazy.

I weigh every AM to keep me on track.. however if I gained 9 lbs in one day as Cheryl said I'd flip out.. I have never seen that kind of increase even on my worst days of binging pre-band of course... if I am up a few ounces or even a lb I don't freak out I just stay the course...

Twice a day...when I first wake up and later at the gym....no change in 2 years..same 5 pounds up and down, from day to day.

I do it purely out of habit...just in case something unusual should show.

Wow. Thanks so much for all the feedback. A lot of great info in this thread. I do notice my clothes feel better so I think I will try only weighing every 2 weeks cause it does freak me out when the scale goes up. Thx.

My surgeon requires that we document our weights weekly. However, he stresses that if you can't resist getting on the scale daily then you need to put it up out of sight. My weight chart determines what he is going to do as far as fills and compilance with the band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
