another silly question!

Recommended Posts

sorry, but I am just full of dumb questions!! I am very good about not eating any more than one cup of food at a meal. It's a rule I won't break. But today I am going to try salad for lunch. So I have some chicken breast I will use, plus lettuce. But since lettuce is so "puffy" (for lack of a better word!), how do you measure that without only eating like 4 pieces of lettuce because that's all that would fit in a measuring cup?? Do you smoosh it down? Thanks in advance!

I would probably just do a handful.

*On a side note, my surgeon is anti-salad! I thought this was pretty funny but when he explained it made sense. Most (not everyone) put so much 'bad' stuff on salad and overdo the dressing but don't include enough Protein. It made a lot of sense and I don't eat as much salad as I used to (I'd rather fill up on protein).

Back to your original question: instead of a measuring cup, just grab a handful (I know you don't want to go over a cup of food but a little extra lettuce probably won't back a huge difference)

Honestly, I just kind of "eyeball" lettuce because there is no good way to measure it.

I use a bowl I'm familiar with so I just kinda wing it. Plus, lettuce has no calories and is mostly Water, so it won't mess up your day regardless.

I do, however, measure everything I put on it.

That is a resonable question LOL. I think I read somewhere in the mountain of paperwork my doctor gave me, that lettuce does not apply to the "one cup rule" and not to worry about the quantity. I am sure others can help too.

I am still on mushie phase and the thought of eating lettuce scares the heck out of me! Let us know how it goes :)

Thank you everyone!! I think I will just kind of eyeball it. And of course, I will measure everything I put on it, which won't be much. Just some chicken breast and a few cherry tomatoes. Thanks for putting up with my weird questions....I'm sure I'll have another one in an hour or two!

I don't think they're weird questions at all. We all have to learn the little things that doctors don't tell us from somewhere, you know? :)

My only advice, and this came from my Dr. is to be careful when eating the salad that you eat the Protein in it first. Don't "fill up" on the salad to the point where you don't get all the chicken or what ever Protein in.

That has happened to me before, and trust me you want to get the protein in first and not worry about how many leaves of vegies you get in.

Protein over lettuce any day.

When I do eat a salad I have the dressing on the side dip the fork in the dressing and the get a little salad this way I taste the dressing without over doing it.

Really a true carnivore at heart.

Lettuce does not have much nutritional value, so when I consider eating "salad", I usually skip the lettuce and have a few pieces of carrot, Tomato, or cucumber.

I miss my salads, but the rules now are for Protein first. A typical salad meal for me would be a small portion of grilled chicken, and for carbs a slice of tomato, carrot, and cucumber.

I also keep any dressing on the side and dip the veggies in the dressing sparingly. You get all the taste without the excessive calories.

Try using mixed baby greens and spinach instead of lettuce. Way more nutritional value. Also try a quarter of avocado with some balsamic vinegar so yummy! I also us a little crumpled goat cheese mozzarella or feta! Also chopped nuts & seeds

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
