Are There Different Types Of Sleeve Surgeries?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been reading alot of posts and blogs and am wondering i there is ore thatn one type of sleeve surgery? When I started this journey i was thnking about lap band surgery but it is not favored by my surgeon although he said he would perform the surgery if that was what I decided I wanted. We mainly talked about Gastric Bypass. The other two people I had my meetings with werevery heavy and in bad health so the surgeon recommended sleeve surgery for them. I have been doing alot of research on this site and other places and am thinking I would rather have the sleeve surgery. The one my surgeon had talked about removed about 75% of your stomach. is this the kind of surgery that plication refers to?

Thanks, Kristi

I had the sleeve(VSG) it is quite a bit different than plication. If you'd like to learn more about the Vertical Sleeve you should join Vertical Sleeve Talk, or I'd be happy to answer any questions about it you have.

Found this on the internet

Gastric Sleeve surgery is an irreversible procedure that involves the reduction of the size of the stomach to about one fourth of its original size by cutting a major portion of the stomach. The open edges of the stomach are stitched together to form a sleeve, hence the name gastric sleeve.

On the other hand, Gastric Plication surgery is a reversible process that involves the use of stitches or sutures to fold the stomach into a sleeve, thus reducing the capacity of the stomach.

How is it so diffrent?

VSG removes the elastic portion of the stomach. This is also tge portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin(the hormone that triggers hunger).

Furthermore with VSG there is a slightly higher chance of a leak in the first week or so, however it does not have the long term risks that plication does, such as necrosis of folded stomach tissue.

Also it is nearly impossible to stretch the Vertical Sleeve. This is not the case in any other WLS.

Also the unfortunate reality is that contrary to early speculation, Plucation has proven in most cases to be irreversible.

I have another question, why do people with the sleeve have so many bad things to say about people that choose the plication? It seems like if we even imply that the surgeries are similar some sleevers just go nuts and bash us. Not saying you are but just wondering about this.

I don't really know about that one. There are tons of misconceptions out there about all WLS.

I can say one of the defining facts of the sleeve is that it eliminates ghrelin. It is the only WLS that does this, and thus eliminates at least temporarily physical hunger.

This is just speculation, but some sleever might be uncomfortable being associated with a surgery that is still considered experimental.

Yes, but in much smaller amounts. About 1/2 of us never regain the hunger sensation.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
