5 Months Out Only 30 Pounds Lost! My Story

Recommended Posts

Thank you for the clarification Cee. I agree also that the forum is a place where everyone can contribute their information freely. It was the way you framed your comments that caused me to reply. And just like you had the benefit of your Dr. explaining to you in person the problem with the Ohio Dr. don't you also think it would be different if your Dr. talked to Dr. Ortiz and explained that to you too? I'm sure it looks quite differently coming from the Doctor when they have their say. I would love to talk to others who have had problems with Dr. Ortiz. I would love for Dr. Ortiz to explain to me what their specific situations are. I am always open to growth in learning.

Take Care.

Ana-Do you work or have any affiliation with Dr.Ortiz? Am not here to bash any doctor but Cee is correct, THIS site is suppose to be an open fourum. We should feel comfortable to post anything we experience or may think without getting attacked. I don't think anyone has ever claimed to be a doctor or a specialist in plication but we are experiencing it. Most of the patients do indeed have other factors we are not aware of. With that being said: we shouldn't disregard any complaints or issues doctors or clicnics in any state or country may have.

Thank you Ana ..were cool (:

By the way I wanted to clarify the situation regarding the Dr. in Ohio. I'm not trying to imply that just because my doctor explained to me what happened that I somehow feel the Ohio Dr. wasnt at fault. I had read about this patient in my research somewhere on the internet. So when I had my consult, I asked my Dr. if he knew anything about this case. He explained that it was an "unusual situation". Perhaps the patients plication was too tight. He explained that the stomach is very pliable and doesnt contain many blood vessels (if I remember that correctly) and that's why it can be folded with little complication. In this case, somehow the blood was not flowing-some kind of clot (insert fancy medical term here) causing the patient to nearly die. They were hospitalized for several months and most of their stomach had to be removed. From my understanding the Dr. was so traumatized by the event he will not do plications anymore. It wouldnt have mattered to me what Dr. wheter it be mine or Dr. Ortiz, who explained this story, again it's just about having more infomation about the risks of plication. My Dr. was very objective and just explained the facts. It also made me feel more comfortable that my Dr. actually knew about this case first hand and had consulted with this Dr. directly. Cause like you said, sometimes everything you read on the internet is not true.

Ana,

It is funny that you mentioned internet rumors. You do not have your facts straight, and are spreading rumors. The Doctor in Ohio had done nearly 50 plications when his patient had the necrosis. At that time Dr Ortiz claimed that that had done nearly 200. Any Doctor can have complications and patients with weight loss failure. The difference that I see is that the Doctor in Ohio actually came on here and posted about his complication. The OCC sweeps any complications they might have under the rug. I know for a fact that they delete negative posts off of their forum.

Best of luck in whatever revision you decide to do. I felt very discouraged many times with my progess, or lack of. I am 18 months post op and weight loss has been very slow. I have lost about 95 pounds since my pre-op diet, and I have about 20 more to go. I have finally made peace with my my choice for plication. The weight loss has been so slow, that not many people would ever assume I had WLS. So what if it takes me almost 2 years to reach my goal? As long as I can keep the weight off, I will consider it a success. I paid $9000. plus another $2000. in travel expences. Then I had some complications that I had to have fixed, and that cost me another $8000. That is a lot of money for me, but my husband said it is the best money he ever spent. Even if I never reach my goal. I feel and look so much better then I did 95 pounds ago.

Makes sense to me Cee :) Thanks for the update. Take care

LMOM, whose comments get swept under the rug? For the sake of no internet rumors, do you have proof of these people? Are they on this forum? I would like more information on that if itis true for obvious reasons. Thanks.

Sorry it's been awhile. Thanks for your concerns, my wife is doing well. I've read some of the comments and will elaborate a little. My wife did not have any underlying health problems when she had her complications. It was simply the stomach herniating and dying. The worst part while this was going on is that our local hospital was clueless with how to fix it and time was of the essence AND the OCC would not return calls and when they did days later, they had no advice. We truly felt abandoned. She ended up having an emergency sleeve surgery but was 3-6 hours from losing her life. Make sure you have a plan after your plication in case you have complications.

Sorry to hear! Is she doing better now? Have heard from the OCC yet? Did you have to pay for the revision?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
