Fruit Juices: Right Choice?

Recommended Posts

Hi SPTians

It's summer time here and there could be nothing compared to a glass of cool juice.

When I asked my doc about having fruit juices he flatly refused! He said fruit juices have high glycemic index. OK! But I don't have a high blood glucose level? Still, a big NO!

Some fruits have low GI, like apples, pears, melons. Is there anyone taking such juices or even you guys have to refrain from these summer delicacies ?

fruit juices are on the diet I'm using. Fruit juices are acidic and have always bothered my stomach (before surgery) so I thin them with Water 50/50. I also froze an ice cube tray with my mixture in it and then put the cubes in the blender for my crushed ice. Helps end the monotony of sipping water and gives you a little flavor.

I was told that juices will slow down your weight loss. Just like any diet (which I have been on just about all!!), you are never allowed juices because of high sugar content. I drink tea now...I was soooo hooked on diet coke...we can never do sodas again..;( but that is ok, I have gotten used to it. I think that I would stay away from any fruit juices just in case.

I was allowed to have 1/2 Water 1/2 apple juice in the hospital. I also think juice has so many calories and high in sugar and not super filling so the tend to not want us to drink it. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
