A Little Over One Year Post Op...the Good, Bad And The Ugly!

Recommended Posts

Well, it's been quite the year! Both good and bad. I had my plication surgery in March of 2011 and have only lost about 50 lbs this past year. The first 4-6 months went pretty good. There was noticeable restriction, but I was definitely able to eat more and more as time went on. Then I started having some hip problems with increasing pain. I wasn't able to work out at all and the diet went out the window as I just came home from work, took pain meds, sat on the couch and nibbled on food all evening. Then I had hip surgery and spent a couple of months recovering from that. I gained 13 pounds during that time and became very scared that I was going to start gaining it all back again. But these past couple of weeks, I've gotten back on track, started exercising and reducing my carbs again. I've already lost 7 of the 13 I've gained. I'm still discouraged that I haven't been able to lose more this year and that my restriction is almost completely gone and I feel like I've wasted the $12,000 I spent on this surgery. HOWEVER! I looked at the pictures of me just before surgery and then of me today and I can definitely see the difference! There is only a 47 lb weight loss between the 2 pictures and I certainly have a long ways to go still, but at least I can see the progress. Then I looked at my inches lost and I've lost a total of 27.5 inches which includes my chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves and arms. Plus my BMI has gone from 56.8 to 46.7....still morbidly obese, but a lot better! So! I feel better about things today and am ready to get back on track!post-369-13813845305302_thumb.jpg post-369-13813845306901_thumb.jpg

I just looked at those pictures again in full screen mode and it looks like I'm drunk in the second one! Ha Ha! I think I was in the middle of a blink.

Are you going to get a revision? I'm hoping to get the duodenal switch just on my intestines later this year. I want my stomach left as is. I'm 16 months out and the regain only gets worse.

No, I'm probably not going to get a revision as I really cant afford it after paying for the plication out of pocket. I'm kind of bummed out about the whole thing, though. It feels like I'm back to fighting for every pound. Good luck to you if you get the duodenal switch!

I'll let Tijuana Plication answer that. I really don't know that much about it.

Sorry for the late reply. It appears that all of my alerts on this site were switched off when the site was upgraded... anyway. With the DS you normally have a VSG and part of the intestine is bypassed (significantly more than with RNY). With the DS you malabsorb 80% of the fat you consume, 50% of the Protein and some complex carbs (you absorb all simple carbs). You have to take numerous Vitamins several times a day as you'll malabsorb a lot of nutrients as well as calories.

The DS is the most successful WLS when it comes to EWL. You can find more information on the DS here http://www.dsfacts.c...-procedure.html

Tijuana Plication, have you been able to have the switch done? I know Dr. jaime Ponce de leon offers to do the switch only in Tijuana and also so does Dr. Ungson in Mexico. Best wishes and I'd love to hear an update.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
