re-band surgery or RNY????

Recommended Posts

I was banded Dec 05 and have had constant problems with eating anything once I was even slightly filled...and stayed hungry. First bite pain was a major issue! I have been UNfilled since Oct 06. I am seeing a new surgeon in the same practice and he says I have 2 options...1 would be for him to remove the band and replace it lower creating a larger pouch at a different angle which he thinks will make a big difference or 2 would be to remove the band and do a RNY. I am 340lbs, 43 yrs old and have gained 40 lbs since being banded. I am in fairly good health other than my joints are giving out due to the weight. Does anyone have thoughts on what they would do or has anyone had this situation come up?

if it were me, i would try the re-banding. i've heard of others having problems if the band isn't positioned just so. how great would it be if all it took was moving it a bit? for me it would be worth the extra surgery to be sure...before having a surgery that is so much more risky.

but maybe its a good idea to get a second opinion? from a doc not in the same surgical group?

good luck in your decision!

Think about this seriously. If you have the RNY you won't be able to simply take it out if you have similar problems. I can't tell you what to do but I know too many people who have serious problems with the RNY...which doesn't mean you would. Now, isn't that helpful? :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
