So I was hoping to get some pointers on your pre-op-diet, I have my surgery at the end of this month, and I want to be prepared, also what kind of Vitamins did you take? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions

Normally my dietician would recommend Optifast, however I found OF really difficult when I tried it earlier because I couldn't stomach the shakes - no matter what I tried (ice, berries, blender, etc), they were still too powdery and gross.

She put me on a low carb / high Protein diet instead. I spent most of the two weeks eating eggs for Breakfast, snacking on yoghurt or a dry salad, and fish and salad for lunch and dinner. I actually threw out all of the food I wasn't allowed to eat - even now my house is only stocked with liquids (I'm one week post-op) and some foods in preparation for the mushy stage next week. I knew that if I had other foods in my house while pre-op that I would just devour it.

I didn't take any Vitamins.

I made sure to drink at least 64 oz of Water a day, and had lean cuisines through out the day. I also did not drink while eating or 60 minutes after eating. I ate about 3 'normal' meals during my 7 day pre-op and lost 13 lbs. If you can drop lbs without the shakes I recommend that becasue after 2 weeks of nothing but them after surgery they get old quick.

My doctor recommended that i drink 2 Protein shakes and eat one healthy choice/lean cuisine with salad or green vegetables as Snacks. I found that hard to follow. I managed to go with 2 lean cuisine meals and one shake every day. i lost 10 pounds on this plan but it was really hard and I kept reminding myself that i would have an easier recovery time if I followed through on it. I took Centrum chewables and Gummy Calcium (childrens-I doubled the dose)

I am 7 days post op right now and have lost another 9.5 pounds. Needless to say, I am ecstatic with losing almost 20 pounds! I have no hunger pangs. I am drinking 2 drinkable yogurts a day (35 calories each)and trying to get 2 slimfasts (190 calories each)down and a cup or 2 of broth. Drinking Gatorade like crazy to keep hydrated. I am consuming less than 400 calories a day. Clear Liquids just don't have calories so there isn't much I can do about that. I feel pretty good but I don't have a lot of stamina.

Good luck. I will start creamy Soups next week and let you know how that goes!!

I'm having my surgery in a week and my doctor put me on a 2 week liver diet that only consists of Protein Shakes, broth and Jello. Since I know I'm going to be deficient in Vitamins for weeks before and after the surgery, I'm taking as many as possible. A Multivitamin, Calcium and B vitamins (for extra protein). I also purchased vitamins in liquid form to take during those few weeks post-surgery since you can only consume clear or creamy foods.

Surgery is on the 18th and I've done a terrible job on my pre-op diet. We've had out of town company for a week, and I have screwed up more times than I would like to admit.

MIL is leaving in the morning so I've got to hit it hard and make up for my slips in the next few days. Anyone have any ideas? I can do shakes with no problem, can do Clear Liquids if I need to, just haven't done well on the shake/soup combo with company here.

I did two shakes a day and one lean cuisine for dinner and lots and lots of Water. When I needed something extra I had broth. Hope that helps and good luck.

That WAS my pre-op diet. Now I'm afraid I need to be a little more extreme to make up for my lapse in judgement. I've seen some posts that talked about a 3 day clear liquid diet pre-op. If that will make up for stupid decisions, I'm willing to try it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
