band plication vs. sleeve vs. plication

Recommended Posts

I had originally set my heart on banded plication. I wanted just the band, but then discovered plication and band can be combined for more immediate results (plication being faster, band for longevity). Also a plus side that, if I have problems, the plication is a great back up for the band and vice versa (can get fill if plication not working). I've been reading horror stories on here about banding, and now i'm unsure. I dont feel like the problems are widespread, however. While they are serious - I think the vast majority of bandsters have success. I feel like just plication isn't enough, and I don't want to have staples and a severed stomach (sleeve).

Do I really need both the band and the plication? Has anyone had this? I'm definitely doing plication, just unsure about the band. I know it's relatively new, but my surgeons are in love with the procedure because it's had excellent results in their practice. Both are tried and true...just up in the air, i guess. Opinions are welcome.

Thanks,

Nikki

Hi Nikki, I only have plication and am not getting much restriction, so have been wondering about getting a band myself. Gingy on lapbandtalk just recently got a banded plication. Genepha on verticalsleevetalk has had the banded plication for about 6 months (I think that's how long it's been). Last I heard Genepha hadn't had any fills, but at least she has the option if she stalls with the plication.

It's certainly got to cheaper to do it all in one go. I'd imagine that there would be less complications with banded plication in that you'd hopefully need less fills, but there aren't that many people out there with it that I know of. Good luck with your research and keep us updated with whatever you end up doing! :D

Hi Nikki

Sorry I didn't see this until today. I had the band for almost 10 years and after about 7 years, I started having lots of complications. I always had difficulty with fills and unfills because my port flipped almost immediately after surgery. I did fairly well with the band and lost about 100 pounds. However, I regained almost all of that weight after 2 children, 5 months of bed rest and an injury from running. I started looking into revision mid-2010 and was given the choice of RNY (which I found out I couldn't have due to my severe anemia) or sleeve. I wasn't happy with either of those choices so after about 6 months of research I found out about the plication. I was going to go to Mexico but ended up finding a doctor here in Southern California who had just started doing plication. I was his very first banded plication patient, which was scary but somebody's gotta be first!! :)

Anyway - I've lost a bit over 42 pounds in 15 weeks. I'd like to lose about another 50-60 pounds. I started at 283 and am now at 240.5. I am actually surprised that I've lost as much weight as I have considering I'm a revision patient. I track my food but not religiously. I ensure that I eat 50-70 grams of Protein and drink about 60-80 oz. of Water. I do exercise almost everyday and walk/jog about 2-3 miles per workout. I completed my first 5K a few weeks ago and am planning on wogging (walk/jogging) a 10K July 23.

I have averaged about 10 pounds per month and have lost 42% of my EWL (excess weight loss). I've gone from a 22/24 (26 top) to loose 20s and almost fitting into 18s! rolleyes.gif

My goal is to be around 170-180ish which for me is a size 12/14. I don't want to be much smaller than that as I prefer that size on me and so does my husband! tongue.gif

PS-I have not had any fills in my band and I plan on leaving it completely empty.

BTW VSG is more successful, something like 98.6% satisfactory weight loss versus 76.6% satisfactory weight loss for GPS IIRC. I'm afraid I don't have the link with the exact stats and citing the source on this machine. The study was done by a Greek doc (name something like G Skouras, but I'm on a terrible internet connection at the mo and find further details).

Jenn,

About how many calories do you take in on any given day?

Jenn,

About how many calories do you take in on any given day?

It depends - during the week I'm a bit more mindful of my calories and tend to stay between 900-1100 calories

and burn about 350 calories with my daily exercise. On the weekends I eat a bit more, and eat out more often so I probably eat around 1200-1400 calories. I don't usually workout on the weekends either. I workout at least 4 times per week and wog (walk/jog) between 2.5-3 miles each workout. My doctor recommends staying around 1,000-1,100 calories during the losing phase. Following this guideline, I've lost about 10 pounds per month. I'm hoping to be 239 by June (about 2 more pounds) and closer to 235 by my 4 month anniversary on June 7.

Take care,

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
