does anyone "snack" after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have an early lunch at 11:00 and sometimes around 3 I will have a handful of smoked almonds or piece of cheese to tide me over until dinner. I try to make it something with Protein in it so it will actually satisfy me.

I'll be 4 weeks out on Tuesday. For the last nearly 2 weeks, I make a point of snacking. B/c my restriction varies, sometimes I can go hours and remind myself to eat to refuel. But sometimes I'm hungry every two hours. A few people here have pointed out that they eat 5 small 'meals' a day - so perhaps that's what I'm doing. I find that Proteins are the only thing I'll snack on, for the 'full' factor. String cheese, cottage cheese, shaved ham or turkey, tofu. Now, this weekend, I'm dealing with my first bought of PMS since surgery. Pre-band my sweet tooth is endless - and post band I'm finding the same thing! So, rather than 'suffer' through - I had a little bit of ice cream, and I've sucked on some 'dark' Lindor chocolates. Pre-band, I'd have eaten a whole candy bar at a time...not now. I'm just trying really hard to make better choices, at least until my first fill.

I find myself snacking in early to late afternoon, when my band loosens up. I almost consider it an extension of the lunch I didn't get to finish because I was tight. I usually have a Protein Shake or oatmeal for Breakfast around 8:00, a light lunch around 11:30 (restriction is still tight), then around 3:00 or 4:00 I get snackey. I'll grab whatever is around my desk - a pudding pack, some cheese, or sometimes a vending machine treat. I then have dinner between 6 and 8, and I'm good for the evening.

Lately, yes, and on all the wrong things.

I'm definitely maintenance eating now, and snacking is a habit I need to quit!

For me, snacking doesnt work. I just dont stop once I start.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
