Considering Lapband..........

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am just trying to find out as much info as possible about this LapBand surgery. I have an appt for a consult on 3/13 with the doctor. I called my insurance and they will cover 100%, so that is good news. I am at my highest weight ever, tonight weighing 353 lbs. I feel horrible, lazy, and so blah! I can't wait to start a new life with this surgery.

Hoping you guys can give me the real insight into the surgery and the aftermath. How did you all feel afterwards? Can you not eat as much as before? I want to know it all................

You have come to the right place. There are numerous threads on this board that you might find helpful. I was just banded this month, so I'm not sure that I can provide the information you're needing, but I researched everything on the web that I could find, and lurked here and read hundreds of threads before I decided to move forward with my decision to be banded.

Happy researching, and welcome to LBT!

Of course, ANY surgery carries that risk. When you have your consult, have a very frank discussion with him/her about your concern, and they should be able to put your mind at ease. I can't remember the actual statistics, but if I remember correctly, mortality rate is very low. I had to ask myself if the risks that this surgery carries were greater than the other co-morbidities that I was facing, and I decided that with my family history, my diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, at age 33, I was taking more of a risk by not having surgery.

You'll have to ask yourself those same questions. Ask lots of questions when you go for your consult.

You have come to the right place. This forum is like a family. Huge(no pun intended) support group. Just curious....what insurance do you have?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
