protein powder question!

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am 6 month post op and I was doing some thinking today.

I usually drink my Protein Powder drinks throughout the day. I maybe have 2 shakes with milk and another 2 of my Cappuccino stuff mixed with Water. I also eat Protein but really dont eat very much.

Should I only be doing the Protein Shakes and powders as Meal Replacements? Or is what im doing ok? Dont know why I thought of this today, 6 months post op, but I guess we will always question if we are doing things right!

My surgeon and nut said to focus on protein and water and not to necessarily count calories and I have lost 74 since 4-22 surgery so I am doing something right. If I can do better of course id like too!

Thanks for any advice!

My question would be how much Protein are you getting daily?

How much is powder or mixed protein and how much is protein from food?

Good question ! From what my surgeon has explained is that the Protein Shakes are a Protein substitute until you can eat regular high protein food. He required 64 grams of protein daily. When I was on liquid and soft foods I was only getting about 10-20 grams of protein daily so I supplemented with protein shakes. Now that I am 18 months post op I get my protein from food but if I don't eat high protein foods on a particular day I will supplement with a Protein Shake.< /p>

I do get some Protein from food, probably 40 or so grams a day on average. I am hardly ever hungery and have to force myself to eat most of the time. Most of the powder I use is Syntrax Nectars or matrix. I would guess I get 100 to 120 a day.

Well I would first suggest you keep a food log. This will allow you to know exactly how much Protein you are getting a day. Secondly I would suggest adding more food protein to your diet. I know we hardly ever feel full, but protein is needed to keep the body going. Our bodies break down while food protein better than the powders.

BBDoodle is correct it is best to eat the food protein then use your synthetic protein. My NUT put things in this order for me: whole food protein, powders and mixes, Protein Bars.

My protein goal on a non workout day is 104. I achieve that mainly through the use of egg whites in my drinks. Egg whites are whole food protein and I don't taste them in my drinks. At 15 months out I hardly ever drink a protein shake now days. Which is a good thing because I do not like that many of them.

I guess everyone is different in what works for them. In our program after a few months we should be consuming most of our protein and other nutrients on solid food and not depending on the supplements as much.

My nutritionist says to use shakes as a supplement because actually eating and chewing your Protein in real food is going to keep you fuller longer. Like everyone else says, log as much as possible. It is the only way I can keep track of what I've had and how much I need. My Dr. Says no more than 90g per day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
