OMG October 2013 Post-ops

Recommended Posts

I'm coming up on 4 months next weekend.. I eat a lot more, 1200 +/- daily.. Always Protein first, then veggies, then the carbs.. BUT, if I have a craving, I give in to it.. Now, I'm not eating Ben and Jerry's, but if I feel like a slice of pizza, I have it.. I can't eat the whole thing, but I get it over with and move on with my life instead of constantly thinking about it.. I don't eat sweets/desserts of any kind anymore, I've tried and I dump.. No ice cream, milk, frozen yogurt, puddings, nothing.. I don't eat fried food either, makes me sick.. So if I get a craving for real food, I eat it.. I try to replace certain foods too, like if I want a baked potato, I have 1/2 of a baked sweet potato.. If I want something like rice, I eat quinoa instead.. I was dying for a burger the other day, so we went to a restaurant that sells bison burgers, had them wrap it in lettuce instead of a bun.. I ate 1/2, took the other 1/2 home for dinner.. I try to feel as normal as possible!!

I try to fit the gym in 3 days per week.. 30 min cardio, 45 min strength.. Its hard right now due to long hours at work, but I know it'll help later on..

Hope everyone is doing well!!!

My surgery was 10/21. I'm getting there slowly but surely. I began pre- op diet at 256 lbs, my weight on morning of surgery was 241.5 lbs and as of this weeks weigh in, I'm currently 211.5 lbs.

30 lbs down in nearly 13 weeks....but 44.5 lbs down since I began this journey, so thats nothing to gripe about! ( I've done alot of moaning and whinging about slow weight loss...haha).

I have gotten slack on my exercise which is a matter of prioritizing my time better.

I also have a confession! Ive been tasting and trying old trigger foods this past week. My restriction is not that good and last night I was able to eat x2 pieces ( 20 mins apart) of toast slathered with butter. :-(

Please dont flame me - Im human and have carb addictions. Im still learning to overcome them and the head hunger. I woke up today and got back on the wagon though, that's the main thing eh?

Oh, believe me, I know about these carb addictions. I have been suffering for the past three weeks. I've been strong this week, but I've been tempted to eat the devil's own food (and devil's food) many times this week. I had to stare down Bagels, pastries and cakes at a working Breakfast this morning. I knew there would be food like that so I ate a cinnamon-raisin English muffin before the meeting. It was a lower fat and calorie alternative.

I've even been reviewing the Paleo Diet in the past two days to see if I think I can do that. I often think I'd be better if I never ate grains or white sugar again. It's like a little taste and I start looking for more and more.

I've lost 84 pounds since my 10/15/13 RNY surgery, but I haven't lost at the same rate since the head hunger came back. Why couldn't I have been one of those that doesn't have to deal with this until at least 6 months out?

Using all the tricks I know to best it, though. I didn't have 6 months of Binge Eating therapy in 2012 for nothing. Good luck, Rach.

Binge eating therapy?? Hmm...sounds good. My nut has offered a referral to a psychologist for my addictions and cravings. I was self pay and from the moment my surgery decision was made (after about 18 months of researching) I was practically wheeled into surgery 2 weeks later. I had none of the required therapy sessions many others have done. I can certainly see why its a requirement though. Have this battle (If not more) remains in our heads.

I have always felt hunger from the 3rd week post- op. So to me, each day is still a battle like it was when I dieted pre-op for all those years. Luckily for me, the tool is working and I cant put away the quantities I used to and I've been pretty good with my food choices - save for a few bumps along the way.

One book I read is good as it deals with Binge Eating Disorder. It's "Crave" and the subtitle is "Why you binge eat and how to stop." The author is Cynthia M. Bulik Ph.D.

I had my 3 month follow up today. Down total of 60 so far. All the labs are great except my A1C which was 10.8...damn diabetes!! Doc says he wants me to go back on meds and to not be discouraged but it is hard not to be cause the diabetes was the reason I decided to have the surgery.

No other option but to chive on and see what happens in the next few months.

Don't get discouraged you'll get there. I had the surgery partly because of my out of control hypertension. After surgery I thought for sure I would be cured. I ended up taking more medication. Likely the stress of losing? Who knows? Anyway I am 7.5 months out now and as of last week officially off all of my hypertension medication. I now run a perfect 90/60 average which is perfect for a woman my size. 7.5 months ago I was taking 3 different medications and was struggling to keep it inder 90 and sometimes 100 on the bottom number.

Long story short keep your eye on the prize it might take a bit longer to get off meds but it will likely happen.

Congrats on your success!!

So folks, we're 4 months post-op! I've started to notice a funny trend. When I've run into people who haven't seen me since pre-op days and who don't know that I had WLS, they all comment on my hair! "Is that a new color or style, Molly? You look great!" It's happened about 6 times in the last month. I just smile and say thank you.

I've noticed more hair on the brush, on the floor, in the drain, etc., too. Luckily for me I have a lot of hair (still?)

My hair is very thin now and not as long as it use to be. I am thinking about cutting my very short.

Terry, so you never eat carbs? Wonder if that is healthy in the long run? I think I am carb sensitive. The only thing that doesn't seem to trigger cravings is sugar free popscicles. I'll try backing off on carbs.

I eat carbs but not simple carbs like sugar, white bread, white rice, white potato, and Pasta. I eat complex carbs w/whole grains and some Protein, like Josephs wraps, quinoa, sweet potatoes, beanitos, whole grain crackers and Bear Naked Protein Granola. I eat Protein Bars on occasion.

I eat protein first, then veggies, then carbs if I can. Most times there is just no room for carbs. I am healthy enough - all my blood tests come back perfect. I'm probably eating better than I have in my whole life. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
