Wardrobe Issues!

Recommended Posts

Okay - what is everyone doing to deal with their work clothing situation? I have some presentations and big stuff coming up where I need to look professional - but no way I can afford to buy clothes at the rate I am losing. I know that you can check thrift stores - but until I am several sizes smaller - it is slim pickings for plus size work wear in decent condition. Does anyone know of a website or place where people trade clothes or sell their clothes cheap as they are losing?

Check local churches, many have free clothing closets.

I also had all the sizes from 14 to 22. I'm in a sixteen now - if I get smaller than a fourteen it's going to get expensive.

Try higher end thrift stores. You can get some nice, brand name things for work in those places. My friend was assistant dean at UMass and got some of her outfits in places like that. Also clearance sales are good ways to find quality clothes for cheap. I buy work slacks in that awesome stretchy material everyone has now. I can get a couple sizes out of them. Macy's has a nice selection - I liked them so much that last week I ordered some from their website in two different colors and in two different sizes (M & L). And they didn't cost me a penny because I had returned a bunch of things that were too big and still had tags on them - I got over $100 on a store credit. :-)

We have designer consignment shops in our area...I've been hitting those...I buy a lot of work out clothes for casual wear as they fit longer. I have a problem because I have a 36" inseam and most pants are wat too short. I've been making do with some classic black, tan, grey slacks and a few skirts. I mix with a lot of tops and scarves, etc. I am stuck between a 14 and a 16 depending on the brand and cut of the slacks. Combine that with the length problem and arrrgghh!

I've also been hitting the higher end thrift stores. I'm a 16-18 right now. I had from 20-28. So now I'm out of clothes. I just dropped off 9 plastic bags of clothes to the local consignment store. Ugh. I DID buy several sweaters at that same store and one was a large. I haven't bought "large" on anything in a decade.

There used to be a consignment shop here that catered to plus sizes - but it closed. The other higher end consignment shops really do not have anything near where I am now (size wise). Maybe I can check some of the bigger cities when I travel and see what I can find!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
