Just had surery on th 25th

Recommended Posts

So, every time i try to sip down Water, i feel like a have to burp. I get this gurgling that goes up my throat. Is that normal? And everything that has a sweet taste to me tastes disgusting, and everything that has a salty taste is now too salty. I font even like the taste of plain Water. Am i ever going to get my old taste back? Since i got home yesterday i stopped taking the pain killer. I tried taking the meds for nausea, but that just made me even more nauseous. And i am having A very difficult time keeping up with fluids and Protein.

That is TOTALLY normal!! The first few days are definitely the hardest, but you'll figure things out soon enough. I had the same experience with my tastes! before surgery I LOVED crystal light, and now it is way too sour/sweet for me. After a few weeks I was basically back to normal in terms of taste. I don't remember having much problems with drinking Water, but I know I definitely didn't get enough Fluid or protein....but you have to listen to your body and do the best you can!!! Best of luck to you!

Hi, I'm new here, I just had my surgery on the 23. I'm depressed, sad, weak, and hungry. I can't take in more than 2 teaspoons of broth. Has anyone else had that problem?

Wow, I had the band on May 18, 07 and I had to have emergency surgery 2 weeks later to take it out. I was told by the surgeon my body rejected the lap band. It took a long time for me to work up the courage to get the bypass. I no in time it will get better.

This is completely normal. I had surgery in May and was angry, tired, emotional, stressed, etc. It got better for me when I started eating real foods again. liquids and soft foods made me gag most of the time. I would say I started feeling kind of normal at 6 weeks. Focus on what you need to get done and what can wait. Don't be too hard on yourself. Celebrate when you achieve your Protein and Fluid amounts. It is HARD at first. I guess that is why not everyone is having the surgery. You can do it! I am 4.5 months out started at 237.5 lbs now I am 173.5. Still have days that are hard but it does get better.

I can't really take in much, I just got out of the hospital for dehydration. It was such a horrible experience, I was so dehydrated they couldn't find a vain for the iv. I was poked over 8 times. I was told the last time if they couldn't find the vain, they were going to have to go in my groin or neck. Thank god they were able finally get it in. Now I'm home and I can't really take in Water or Jello, I feel like it is setting in my chest.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
