TaraBear86 7 Posted September 27, 2013 OK so I had RNY 3 weeks ago and I'm doing just fine. I am wanting to get a new PCP now that I've had the surgery. I'm wanting someone that is familiar with bariatric surgery and what all I will be going through. I don't feel my current PCP is a good fit for me now that I've had RNY. My question is, what kind of PCP should I go to now? Is family practice ok or should I see general medicine, or internalist... I have no clue what kind of PCP would be the best choice... My surgeon gave me a few names of doctors he recommends but I'm not sure if they will be a good fit for me as most of them are older and I feel I won't be able to relate with them or connect with them... HELP PLEASE?? :-)
SoccerMomma73 1,867 Posted September 27, 2013 It really depends on you and your health problems. In general, a good family practice provider can deal with most typical things (including diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, etc) if you have any complicated issues you may prefer an internal medicine doc. General medicine is really just family practice. BUT, as you've shown, it's important to have a good fit with your provider so a lot is based on personality, and there's really no way for someone else to gauge that :/ HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight
TurnThePage 220 Posted September 27, 2013 You might give your location and ask if anyone nearby has a PCP they can recommend. My family practitioner is a gem and really went to bat for me when I was initially denied by the insurance company. I've been seeing her for 15+ years and she is truly a partner in caring for my health.
oldoneyoungagain 200 Posted September 28, 2013 Same here. I'm very particular in chosing a doctor as had a bad experience with a family practice doctor. I usually went to a internalist as worked in a teaching hospital but switched to a family practice doctor when I moved. He was my daughter's doctor and I had gone with her several times. He has always been very supportive of my weight loss and helped with the lap band and now with RNY. As far as my RNY I will continue to see my surgeon for the rest of my life if need be and they even suggested that.
