Food log format? List of do's and don'ts re: food

Recommended Posts

I would like to start a food log. I'd like to be a step ahead of my WLS clinic before I seem them, and show them I have lost weight because I am keeping a food log. I had to do a log when I was initially banded, three small meals, two Snacks and a safe dessert if I was good that day. My NUT had me follow the South Beach diet, it SUCKED. Assuming my diet will be different than the South Beach, what kinds of food do RNYer's eat? Is there a list of do's and don'ts? Tell me or show me what you do.

I had a 2 week diet to shrink the liver before surgery day.

I was given precise instructions and was reminded NO cheating.

The list contained a variety of non starchy vegetables, steamed/baked chicken or fish the size of your palm but not more, Protein Soups, bars, pudding purchased from the surgeon's office, fat free/light canned broths and such.

No alcohol, no sodas, no fried foods, no pizza or bread based foods, no Pasta nor rice.

A half year ago, I tried MFP. I found it tedious yet eye opening. I don't own a smart phone with the app for it, which I would LOVE to do! But you know? I started taking food short cuts and started lying to myself. What good was that, so I quit. I'll check it out again just because you suggested it. :P Thing was, it gave me honest insight into what I was putting into my mouth and I wasn't ready to be shocked. You think it would still be a good thing to do if I'm not dieting yet? Would be an eye opener.....

I like Sparkpeople. I didn't log the first couple of months. I worried about getting enough Protein and fluids and sometimes I worried about eating too much or not enough. Logging is used by a lot of people here and recommended by my team for tracking food, exercise and fluids. When you don't log you tend to estimate. Over or under, either way you're usually wrong. I found that logging is an accurate way to see what I'm doing every day. I'm eating more calories than I thought (but still well within my range) and most days I'm getting all my Protein. In the evening, if I see I'm short on protein I'll have another Protein shake to make up for it. If I'm short on fluids I'll have another bottle of Water before bed. Not enough (or any) exercise? A longer walk with the dogs is in order. The point is I now KNOW where I stand. I love it - no more wondering and uncertainty! :-)

You'll find more food ideas here on the forum than you can shake a stick at. Go to the Home page and under "Main Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums" you'll find "Food and Nutrition" - a whole forum dedicated to appropriate foods at various post-op stages. The first few weeks following your surgery can be challenging but they pass quickly and you'll soon find yourself in the routine. Virtually all surgery teams give their patients very detailed, written instructions on what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat - at each stage of the process. It sounds daunting but it's not nearly as bad as most folks imagine.

Stay positive. Stay patient. And stay focused on following the protocol as closely to the letter as you possibly can. You're gonna love the new you!!

P.S. I strongly agree with what others have said - food logs are an enormously powerful tool and the more you use it, the more you learn and the more valuable they become. I'm almost two years out and I log every single day. My Fitness Pal and Sparkpeople are both excellent!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
