Brain not Working

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am 9 days post op and back at work yesterday. My job takes a lot of mental energy, but my brain isnt working.

Of course, my stomach is not in the least bit hungery, but, my brain is starving. I have that jittery, un-able to focus, irritalbe, angry feeling that comes with low glucose, and I am exhausted. I had to leave early yesterday... something I cant keep doing.

Today I tried harder to keep a constant flow of intake... sipping Protein... eating my pureed stuff...but still struggling

Anybody else have this issue? Did anything help? How long did this phase last?

Thanks for your help

Stacey

We were required to drink 100% pure juice mixed 50/50 with Water (either 32 or 64 ounces a day, can't remember now!!). If I skipped my juice, my brain died....I had to have that bit of sugar consistently throughout the day or I just couldn't think.

Since you are only 9 days post op, some of the problem could still be the effects of the anesthesia. According to the research I did, it can remain in your body awhile. Just a thought..

Holy cow I don't remember??? I think it was 6 weeks but by around 3-4 I tapered off because I was 'eating' more and didn't get the weak, shake, brain dead stuff. Just keep in mind it IS sugar so there's the potential to dump if you drink it quickly. I had mine in a big bottle and just sipped all day. At times I mixed it with crystal light instead of Water to 'spicy things up'. I found on my days off I was semi okay without it but if I was working I couldn't make it without the extra umph. (Disclaimer-these we're my docs rules, some don't allow carbs at all so always check with your program first)

wow, I hope things work out, I did not go back to work for 6 weeks and still felt that jittery feeling at that point. I just tried to keep the Protein in via, Protein Bars and cottage cheese, but at 9 days you must still be on liquids/puree? Do be careful with the juice - it can cause stomach upset because of the sugar - try it at home first! Can you tolerate chicken broth? Try that for some protein/liquid. Best of luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
