I got the "hate you skinny girl" look today. I was in the elevator at Sears carrying my new bathing suit and an overweight woman got on with me. I gave her a smile and I got the look. I know the look well as I have given many skinny women the look. It is a look of envy and hatred. The if only look - if only I was that skinny, if only I had a flat tummy, if only I was a smaller size.

I have never been on this side of the look and felt bad. I knew how she was feeling, but not sure what to say. In the end I did not say anything. When I see someone who is overweight I want to go to them and say you don't have to live like this. There is an answer out there and you will feel so much better, but I never want to hurt someone's feelings.

Has anyone said something in this type of situation?

Didn't notice the look yet as most of the times I tend to be ice cold (it's my nature) but honestly I would not care a bit.

These resources are out there for the rest of our kind. I highly doubt WLS is not on a overweight persons mind by now, they just have to find it in themselves to decide if that's what they want in order to become healthy.

But ... I do get what your saying and I think your heart is in the right place.

Enjoy your healthy self and be proud of the wise choice you made to get you where you are at today --- a healthy happy beautiful woman.

I would LOVE to tell people that RNY surgery is paid for by most insurance companies. I work in the medical field and had no idea my ins. paid until my sister had the surgery and we both have the same ins. company. Once I heard that I immediately made a appointment. There are quite a few people at work I would love to tell but I don't want to hurt their feelings in any way. I know when I was overweight I felt awful about myself and I am sure others do as well, not every overweight person but the majority probably do.

My son has a good friend that is 500 lbs plus. A great guy, over the top smart, thirty something and heading for a train wreck. Every time I see him, or anyone else suffering from obesity, I want to have the "there is an answer" conversation. But I've never found a way to do that. I'm not sure there is a way to do that. The reality is that you have to want it. You have to be willing to reach out. You have to be frightened enough, angry enough, frustrated enough, depressed enough - to take the first step. And that's when your world changes.

So I get asked daily by my patients what I'm doing to lose weight and I'm totally open about it. Most people are awesome and congratulate me, a lot of people ask questions. About the only people that respond negatively are my morbidly obese patients ( don't get me wrong, most are nothing but supportive but on the rate occasion I get negative feedback, it's almost always from an obese patient). I get the impression they think I failed or cheated. Maybe it is cheating because it is a WHOLE lot easier than losing weight without the RNY but I hate that I feel like they're judging me. That said, I've had several look in to the surgery and some active in the process of getting it approved so YAY for them for taking control of their lives!!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
