Help after Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone feel is if they did or didnt need help ? Wish they had more or less help? I have a 1 year old and she will likely stay with my mother because my husband works nights and obviously not being able to pick her up and being on pain medicine so I have that covered however - with my husband working nights ..Im deciding whether me beinv alone at hoke is a good idea ? I'm sure some people have no other choice and make it just fine but I want to do what will make me most successful. My husband will likely only be off the day of my surgery and thats it. However he is off weekends so I'm trying to plan surgery where I woukd likely be discharged ag the weekend which would give him 3 days at home with me. Thoughts ? Thanks everyone!

I left the hospital on Thursday (late), stayed with my parents until Sunday, went home with my 9 year old. Was home alone BORED Monday and Tuesday and started working 1/2 time on Wednesday. I was fine by myself. My son carried the laundry to and from the washer, otherwise I did everything on my own from 6 days post op. simple cleaning, easy meals, it was fine. I truly believe part of the reason my recovery was so quick and easy was because I was up and doing almost everything within days of surgery.

:) I was fine, but I'm stubborn :D I don like just sitting around....so I didn't! I would be concerned if you had your baby but if you don't ave to worry about carrying her that makes things much easier! Good luck!!!!

Had surgery 9/11 home 9/12. Opened my front door, closed my front door and have been taking care of myself. Daughter, however, lives next door. So did have her run to the pharmacy Thursday for my pain meds and then again on Sunday for some other things I needed. As soon as I stopped my pain medication on Sunday, went shopping on Monday and took dog to the vet. I'm actually ready to go back to work, but will wait until I see the doctor Thursday. FYI I'm 71 years of age.

I don't think I would have been ok by myself the first few days. It may have been just me scared of overdoing it and popping open my incisions or developing a hernia in my healing muscles. But I needed help getting out of bed. I needed help in the bathroom. I was also scared to be by myself on pain meds when I sleep because of my sleep apnea. The pain meds made me have more apnea episodes even with my cpap on. Everyone is different and you may want to have someone on standby that can come over and help in a pinch just in case you find yourself having more difficulty than you anticipate.

I was thinking the same thing so my husband is taking FMLA from work for a week to be home with me.

I didn't need any help at all. But my children are all adults. If I had children under 3-4yrs I would have sought help. Young children are a lot of work and toddlers/babies need to be lifted and carried. They're probably over the weight limit for lifting. Talk to your doctor about your weight and time limits for lifting your baby. Good luck!

I live alone but my boyfriend stayed the first night I was out of the hospital, the next day he went to work and I was just fine. I think it all depends on the individual.

I have a two year old and my parents stayed with me for a month post surgery! I was so happy to have them here too! I was totally useless from an energy standpoint plus the narcotics knocked me out. Then the has pains kept me pretty low key for several weeks.

I live by myself and used to taking care of myself. My mom (who is in her 80s) offered for me to stay with them by I think that would drive me crazy. My house is one level, there's is two. They don't have the cable chanels I'm used to, etc, etc, etc. I'm glad you posted this since this came up just yesterday. I told my mom I'll let her know.

My mom came to stay with me for almost a week after the op. it was the best thing! I was quite emotional and it was so good having someone with me just to not be alone.

She made me broth and just mothered me a bit which really helped me feel better - i was quite out of it for a few days, had a very high fever they never could figure out what caused it. But i know i wouldve gone crazy if i was all alone the whole day while boyfriend is working.

My husband works nights too. I didn't have anyone here with me. We did have my inlaws on standby if I needed them but before he left, he made sure I was comfortable in my chair, had Water and my pain pills next to me and anything else I would need. I was perfectly fine.

A friend drove me home from the hospital, but after that I was on my own and have had no problems whatsoever caring for myself. Mostly slept the first couple of days. I'm 60 and have had no complications or issues with the surgery or recovery. No pain meds since the day after surgery. I had prepared my foods, drinks and creature comforts before going to the hospital. Started working again in my home office 1 week after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
