Does food get stuck

Does food get stuck with the RNY like it does with the band?

I hear people on here say it gets stuck with RNY but at 7 months post-op I have never experienced it. I may be losing slow but my RNY is a little piece of heaven compared to the misery I had with the band.

I had a band, now I have the rny. I don't get stuck but you will feel it if you eat too much. It hurts and you will feel it if you eat something with too much fat. It hurts. I have never dumped thank GOD. You still have to be careful when you eat and don't eat and drink together. Best Wishes!

I had gastric bypass and yep, food gets stuck if you eat too fast or don't chew well or, if you eat the wrong thing.

Yes, very much so. Usually, it's due to texture (pasta or breads), not chewed well enough, ate and swallowed it fast, fatty food, possible stricture.

In my case, I forget to chew properly and I end up swallowing big chunks. That's why my food gets stuck and I end up throwing it up.

Also if the food is too dry. tuna with no mayo and chicken does gets "stuck" for me. And once I slightly overcooked my fish (making it a little dry) and tried to eat it anyway - bad idea!

So, I guess it varies a lot :D. I can eat Pasta, rice, bread, etc without issue. tuna or eat don't bother me. I do tend to be a slow eater and chew well so that may be part of it.

In other words...not much difference from the band.

For me personally, it's day and night! Guess I'm just lucky. Will keep my fingers crossed you're one of the lucky ones!

That's the worst part about the band. I've heard the same thing from friends that have RNY..... it still gets stuck. I'm just going to weigh out my food and stick to that. lol

I had the bypass and have not experienced food getting stuck - I chew thoroughly and think that is why

I don't call it stuck, but you will know if you didn't chew well, ate too fast, or ate too much. Haven't had any dumping, since week one, think that was caused from actually Benafiber. Not had a problem with that, but did get sliming, some call it foamies, and then it came up. Second time had to force it to come up, think I ate too much that time. You will definitely know when it happens totally uncomfortable. Never had a problem with the band in this area. But this doesn't actually bother me, as it is a signal I didn't do something right.

I was never able to throw up with the band. food would get stuck and I would have a lot of pain. Eventually everything would go down, but definitely not fun. I am 5 weeks out from rny surgery and, I try to be really careful with what I eat. The only thing I notice is that, if I eat too much (not that much!) I get hot flashes and feel slightly nauseated. I don't dump but I feel like I have to lie down.

I keep telling myself to eat less and stop sooner and it seems to help. I think it is just a learning curve. Have not tried bread or Pasta yet. The dieticians visual of a dough ball being stuck was enough to cure me from even trying bread or pasta!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
