One month post op and calorie intake

Recommended Posts

The last few days I've been having almost 1000 calories a day. I've been getting between 50-70 grams of Protein per day and the carbs have been around 125 grams per day and fat has been about 28 grams per day. Does that seem like a lot to anyone? I don't know if I'm eating to much already. I'm at the tail end of phase 4. I've lost 26.2 lbs total.

HW 223.2 lbs

SW 210 lbs

CW 197 lbs

GW 123 lbs

Not a Nut but I would increase Protein to 80 gms daily and think you'll feel more satisfied and not eat as many grams of carbs. My Nut said only 75 grams of carbs or less and 50 grams of fat or less per day. Hope this helps but then again don't know how far into your journey you are.

I was told to get at least 75 g. of Protein. When I saw my NUT, she said that I was probably consuming too many calories. I was about 8 weeks out at that time and I was consuming up to 700 calories/day. She also wanted me to cut way down on carbs. I try to keep my carbs at 50% of my protein. That being said, your weight loss sounds terrific. Congrats!!

Thank you, ladies. I'm going to try to get more Protein in. Some days it seems really hard to get that much in. I can only stand to drink one Protein Drink per day. Bleh!

So my nut just got back to me. Here is what she says. I hope this can help anyone else that may have the same questions

"It sounds like you are right on target. Typically patients take in ~700-1000 calories per day following surgery. Are you still drinking Protein shakes?

As you transition to regular foods- the goal is 3-4 small meals per day, and minimum 50g Protein per day. Refer to the example menu in your diet packet (it says 1 year post surgery but it can apply as of week #5 or 6)."

My nut told me I need between 90- 100 g of Protein daily. My height plays a factor as why so much I was told.

My nut basically gave us a min amount for Protein - 75g for women and 100 for men. You need Protein for so many things. I can tell when I have had a bad protein day because the next day I am tired and irritable. I am 1 year post op and at goal weight for the most part. i am trying to build muscle and lose another 5 pounds as well. My goal is 104g per day due to my activity level and goals. Most days I hit my protein goals. I do not drink Protein shakes on a daily basis as it is best to get your protein from whole foods. My protein supplement of choice is double pasteurized egg whites. I add them to my drinks and can not taste it at all. I will drink 32oz of Powerade and add in 15 pumps of egg whites. I turned a 0g drink into 49.5g drink. It is whole food protein so your body is able to use all of it. I then use food to make up the other 50 g of protein.

When calculating your calories keep in mind that 4 calories are in every gram of protein. So if you are taking in 100g protein everyday you start out at 400 calories daily.

My next suggestion is that you log your food. This will help you keep track of your protein/carbs/fat on a daily and weekly basis. Keep in mind it is about averages throughout your week. Some days I hit all my goals (which is rare) some day I go over/under. However if you are using food logs like they are intended you can see when you have good/bad days and make adjustments throughout your week.

We have a thread started call Food Log Discussion and there is a lot of information on that thread! Come in over and join us!!

I attached a picture of the egg white that I use. Always stir in the egg whites don't shake. Shaking it creates foam.

I do not taste it when I add it to something with flavor. Powerade had a good flavor and I can not taste the egg whites. There is a part of your brain that says - ewwww I am eating raw eggs, but if you can push that aside it is a great way to get Protein in.

Make sure you do not buy the store egg whites. Only get the one that is double pasteurized.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
