This may sound silly, but... my Dr says that I should only anticipate loosing 50% of my excess weight, which i would like to think is on the lite side. After seeing all the fantastic results from everyone posting, I was just wondering if anyone has done extra stuff besides diet and exercise. It seems that most have not given up everything and have fantastic results.

I set my goal at a realistic amount but would love to know that you can continue to loose more than 50% of excess weight.

Of course you can lose more than 50% of the weight you need to. There are plenty of people here who have losses that confirm this fact. Remember, statistics are based on past years of success and there have been quite a few changes to the band since it was first introduced; both in design as well as in surgical approach.

Everyone loses weight with diet and exercise whether or not they have had surgical intervention. For those of us who are banded, we needed an intervention to ASSIST with the diet to allow more exercise. The only limitation to the amount of weight you can lose is you.

Yes, you can lose more then 50%. It's up to you, which is kind of both the good and bad about the band. It won't do it for you, but it's a great tool if you work with it. I'm six months out and down about 33% already.

Hey Jennifur,

I have noticed that if I keep positive about my weight loss, I seem to lose more than usual. Does positive attitude have anything to do with it? I have no idea, but it is a suggestion. Also, you shouldn't compare yourself to other people. Yes, other people may be losing more weight than you, but if you are losing weight, why complain?

Anyways, this is my first post and I hope it has helped a little bit. If not you, then maybe someone else :)

thanks for the input, I am glad to be loosing -

They really stressed that to me when they scheduled my surgery, but i'm willing to work for it, i was just beginning to think that 50% was the max.

I'm not banded yet but as I understand it, this is a tool to help me with my insatiable appetite. If I can get that bad boy under control, the weight will come off. If I get 60 or so pounds off, I know I can walk. If I can walk, I know I can cycle/treadmill/and otherwise excercise. If I do that and diet, the weight will come off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
