Cannot stand protein shakes any longer

Recommended Posts

I have 2 weeks left on liquids, and I've come to the place where I don't think I can stomach Protein Shakes any longer. What did you do when you came to this point? I'm not sure what else there is to do if I can't drink Protein shakes right now.

I am still pre op- however I read from several people (somewhere! I have read so much it all comes together) There is these Protein "shots" they are literally 1-3oz maybe and it's a lot of protein in them - I may can find them again but I would think that small amount would be so much easier to get down verses an entire shake

Research the shots, many are collagen Protein which is not absorbed well..and they test like dog butt, so if I'm going to drink dog butt I ABSOLUTELY want it working right!!!!!

They tasted really nasty! So for me they were harder to get down.

I tried the Protein shots (42 g per shot) and as someone said above tastes like dog butt... actually I think dog butt would taste better. I ordered 2 cases and ended up sending them back they were horrible. Try different brands and/or flavors. I'm 16 months post op and really do not need the Protein anymore since I am getting it from food but at times I replace a meal with a Protein shake like after a workout. They are not my fav.. but i quickly drink them and be done with it. You could get unflavored and sprinkle on your food !!!

It is VERY important to get your protein ... its a must !!!!!

I've never tried the shots but just thought I'd throw it out there! For the shakes I drink Premier Protein and I think they taste great!

I drink premier Protein in chocolate. Can find them at SAMs & costco. Only ones I could stomach. As far as the shots some of the patients in my support group add them to 32oz of Water and just sip on it all day. They say you can't hardly taste them in the Water. Otherwise I have to agree they are probably worse than butt, which I have not tasted lol! Gave mine away to support group.

Most (if not all) Protein shots or bullets are collagen Protein which has a digestibility score of 8 out of a possible 100. All the protein in the world is useless if you can't digest it.

Liquid Protein vs. tablets? An interesting question. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer after more than an hour of researching. So let's consider the anecdotal evidence:

- You never hear of a doctor recommending protein tablets (at least I never have).

- Virtually all bariatric surgeons stress the importance of post-op protein

- Doctors are well aware that many folks struggle with getting enough protein

- liquid protein supplements (shakes, drinks like Isopure, or powders mixed with some liquid) appear to be the overwhelming doctor recommended choice. In spite of the fact that, given the choice, tablets would almost certainly be preferred by many.

I don't know what it is (although I suspect it may be a question of absorption), but there has to be a reason why tablets are conspicuously absent in the options recommended by doctors. Probably would be a good idea to check with your doctor before substituting tablets for other protein supplement options.

I am post op so this may not mean much but here goes anyway. I tried the Protein Shots and found that the New Whey with 42gms of Protein in the acai berry brand was so nasty even added to Water it was gross and I couldn't imagine sipping on this all day. the short bottle shot in fruit punch was drinkable can't remember the name of it but the reason I said i am post op and this may not mean much is because I was doing the shots for protein when I had ran out of the Meal Replacement and my doctor had to get me back on track. protein wasn't all my body needed at that time so I had to get my Meal Replacements back in play for the vit & nutrients that a protein shot will not provide. I was also told by a personal trainer that the body only absorbs 35gms of protein at one sitting anyway so when me and my smart self was adding protein to my meal replacement to get it done and over with in one sitting i was not getting the protein absorption like I really needed. and you know what comes next with poor absorption of protein. The body starts to suffer skin and hair.< /p>

I think I may go back to Premier. I had a chocolate one left and drank that after I came home and it went well. vanilla doesn't taste good anymore. I knew I should have listened to everyone and not bought Protein before surgery. Now I have three jugs of nectar I can't stand. My surgeon's office was pushing it on us.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
