my gastric surgery story

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery in May for the first few weeks I was doing well with my diet. The next week I started vomiting and having upper abd pain. Into the hospital I went. Seems my gallbladder was acting up. I went home after 4 days. Restarted my diet and doing well for 2 weeks. Then I started vomiting again. Back into the hospital after the weekend I had my gallbladder removed went home a couple of days later after I was eating food. Life w as good my taste budds were off. I couldn't tolerate the taste of Water and anything you would mix with it. Water tasted like rust. I'm between a rock Nd a hard place. Was doing well with my food. Then I could only drink milk and last thursday I vomited milk, so when I went to the doctor I was admitted to the hospital for dehydration and nausea. Just got out Sunday. I've lost 87lbs. but dealing with this nausea is too much. Has anyone had a similar experience. I do feel good about myself. I've gone from a size 28 down to a 20. I have 2 pair of brand new jeans each worn twice and I've out grown them.

Water is about as big of a "must have" as there is. 75% of your total body weight is Water and 20% of what's left is Protein. As you learned the hard way, dehydration can land you back in the hospital in a heartbeat. So the bad news is "I couldn't tolerate the taste of water and anything you would mix with it" is probably not a realistic option. One way or another, there's no getting around your need for water. The good news is that it mixes easily with almost anything, is contained in varying amounts in almost all food, and comes in a huge variety of bottled or flavored options. Perhaps you can give us a little more information regarding what you've tried?

Lots of folks struggle with getting enough water but it's safe to say that everyone finds a way. You're gonna love the new you!!

It hasn't been my gall bladder, but I've had the heaving/vomiting. Had surgery on July 31. Had unexplained blood loss requiring 2 units of blood transfusion. 2nd surgery the next day to find/stop bleeding and during that one, I aspirated vomit and stopped breathing. I was initially in the hospital for a week. Once I was out, I thought I was doing well, until about a week later. I became so exhausted, I could hardly move. Then, the heaving started. I had 2 endoscopies with dilitation within a week and wound up back in the hospital for 4 more days. I've now been home a week and am right back to the nausea and retching again. My Dr. just scheduled yet another endoscopy for this Friday and somehow I hope that whatever he finds does the trick. I am down 42 lbs in one month and haven't had a moment to enjoy it.

Kellylessbelly---I was doing well right after surgery. 2 weeks then the n/v started. It continues to date. After being in the hospital for the fifth time and more scans. The Dr finally put a label on it such as gastropersis. Where my pouch is very slow to empty into my sm intestines also empty slowly. Now I wear a scolpolmine patch that helps me get rid of the nausea. The Dr says this will go away in about 3-6 months and my taste should come back in the same amount of time. I had my surgery May 1 st. Good luck. It does get better.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
