Is the Protein shake all it claims to be?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm still working up to the Bypass, from the Band and I have a question that always haunted me. I know you're supposed to get 60-80 gm's of Protein a day. With my Band, I was encouraged to eat as much protein I can rather then drink it. But honestly, I can't fathom it. My Band is in my body, but my restriction is simply not there. Fills only make me sick, and I've been unfilled for 6 years. Having never really had a small pouch, I don't get how you get along eating tiny amounts of food and/or getting all the protein in. If I do this procedure, will I be drinking Protein Shakes forever? No one makes it sound very good. I will try sample packs. How much protein can a bucket provide (days?). How much are they on average? I bought The Magic Bullet at a garage sale for ten bucks and wonder if anyone has used it with the Protein Powder? I'm just thrown completely about HOW to get all that protein in.

Mind you I am still Pre-RNY but I have been using shakes for years.

A bullet is great for at home and the plastic cup with the wisk ball is good for on the go. The secret to the bullet is to not over fill it. When making shakes, put a bit of ice in then liquid with your powder on top so when you but it on the engine the powder is getting spun first. Before you put the blade lid on make sure you have atleast an inch of air room in it our it will over flow.

In the past I was using Medifast so I was use to going months on just packets of shakes. It does get old.

I have found I really like the Spiru-tein shakes. You can find them in single serve packets so you can try the different flavors before commiting to a whole can of it. With a cup of Skim milk you are getting about 23g of Protein. No Fiber so you will have to get that elsewhere. Also a ton less sudium then Medifast.

I've been having one shake a day as a Meal Replacement and I don't feel deprived.

Heidi, right after surgery I was drinking several Protein Shakes a day while on the full liquid diet. But now I am 5 months post op and I have only one Atkins Advantage shake per day for Breakfast. For the rest of my Protein I have a scrambled egg w/cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese stick, mini baby bell cheese, hard boiled egg, milk, chicken, tuna, etc throughout the day. I also really like the Unjury products (21 g of protein) and you can order a sample pack to try a variety of flavors. Most days I'm getting nearly 90 grams of protein in.

Having had bypass less than 4 weeks ago I can say YES the shakes are all that at this stage. If it weren't for the shakes, I'd be getting in like 300 calories a day and maybe 20 grams of Protein. You get by on little amounts because you are not hungry. Since you are not hungry the only thing making you eat is you saying well, I need to get in more calories and protein today. But the urge for food is gone. I am conscious of the fact that I need to get it in or I'll be too tired. I like the shakes at unjury.com and they do have a sample pack. You dont have to do them forever but I will probably stay with at least one a day. No they aren't cheap but they are cheaper than food. This is the lowest grocery bill ever lol. When I go back to work I will be grateful for the shakes because they are easy and convenient. They also help you get the nutrients you need without the extra junk that got that weight on in the first place. Good luck!

It is still true you should be working towards eating your Protein as it is natural protein. I am 14 months post op and most days I do not drink a shake. It really depends on what I am doing that day. If I am weight training or playing soccer that evening I will add a Protein Shake to be able to increase my protein to 130 a day. This is my last result on protein intake. Right now I average 100g a day. I get that through food choices.

Everything I eat must have some protein in it. If i am going to eating something there has to be nutritional value to me. However I do indulge every once in a while. I am human after all!

As you get further along you are able to eat more than the first few months post op. I can eat 4oz of meat and a few veggies now. According to my doc 1oz of meat is 10g of protein. 4oz of meat and veggies are so much less than I used to eat.

My supplement of choice is double pasteurized egg whites. I add it to my drinks. I turn a 0gram drink into a 50g drink without any taste. Depending on how much i need will depend on how many pumps i use. 1 pump equals 3.3 grams of protein. It is a natural protein source so I am not adding synthetic whey protein to my diet unless I need to.

Hope that helps

How much do you pay for the bucket of Protein Powder?

I use now foods unflavored whey isolate. A five pound pail is $60. It lasts me three weeks.

Prices of Protein vary widely, depending on brand, quality, and where you buy it. Some of the best deals are online. All Proteins are not created equal. Some have sugar, some are high carb, some have fillers, some are not whey isolate. Some are for weight gain, some are for loss (depends on the needs of the individual). Read the labels, ask your nutritionist if your not sure. unjury and I think some others are created for bariatric patients. Beware cheap products - sometimes they are cheap for a reason. Don't stock up. Your tastes change after surgery. What you like now, you may not like then. Also, on the website "The world according to egg face" there are many , many Protein shake recipes that are amazingly awesome. Check out the website.

Egg whites can be bought in powdered form to add protein to foods and drink. It's safe and tasteless. My son (a marine and a body builder) uses both powdered egg whites and whey protein.

You may not need to have whey protein forever. A lot of us learn to LIKE it. I also have Atkins shakes for Breakfast. I prefer a liquid breakfast in the morning. If I'm low on my protein for the day I'll have another shake in the evening to make up for it. Sometimes I'm just too busy and forget to eat. If that happens a shake is a quick easy meal. Usually I can get the protein I need from my foods. I like fish, seafood, Greek yogurt, chili w/beans, cheeses, and on rare occasions beef. I have trouble with poultry still.

You'll get it all figured out. It's an adjustment but not as hard as it seems. :-)

These egg whites are double pasteurized and intended for people to eat them raw. You don't taste them and as long as you can get over the mental game of - there are eggs in my drink- you do just fine.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
