19 days post op...weird question!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so far the only major discomfort pains I've had is when I'm drinking Water on an empty stomach and I find that sipping it is more bothersome than with a straw. A straw actually hurts less. Anyways, my question is does anyone else experience the funky taste in their mouth after eating/drinking? Like the taste is coming back up? Even though your not ill and not going to throw up? When does that stop?

Could it be Ketosis?

Sometimes you get a metal like taste in your mouth. Not to be TMI but I find that when I'm in Ketosis and I use the bathroom it smells like Nail polish remover.

No, I don't think so...it's more of just a funky taste. Like whatever I ate/drank lingers and is gross. :-(

I dont think I have that, I do have bad breath with ketosis, so i do chew gum to help....I also drink with a straw, because I took in way more air without it...

I agree, the straw reduces air and may help with the feeling. As for the taste, I still have it. My mouth feels like I have morning breath all day long. Part of it is ketosis, I know that well from my Atkins days. I think a lot of it is though that I am not eating much and when I drink, I'm not drinking the same things I used to. I gave up my diet coke so Water and crystal light only is a big change. As for the repeat taste. I did go through some of that for a while but it was right after surgery like day 5-10. I hated it but it did pass. I have noticed that I am way more picky about what I drink out of too now because water bottles taste like plastic now. I think that because we are eating far less, we REALLY taste everything far more. My sense of smell is accelerated too but that's gotten better. Things will Iron out!

I am way more sensitive to both taste and smell. It's not just you! I cant stand Water from a water bottle anymore because I swear I now taste the plastic lol.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
