Birth control pills

Recommended Posts

Has anyone's doctor made then stop their birth control pills 2-weeks before surgery for the pre-op liquid diet phase? I take b/c pills and I haven't had a menstrual cycle in 4-years, so I am scared this is going to add to cramping and bloating due to shocking my reproduction system. Any info would be great, thank you.

Your doc is having you stop them because of the increased risk of blood clots that b/c has with it.

Before my hysterectomy I was on constant pills and the few times I have had to come off I did not have pain until 1-2 months later.

I will give you a word of caution though - during this process you might want to use double protection as we tend to be VERY fertile after the surgery. As our fat cells leave our bodies they shed hormones and we become fertile.

Thank you for the explanation. I didn't understand it and now it makes perfect sense. Extra protection it is, although I am not sure I will feel exactly "froggy" after surgery to worry about it, but it would probably be at least 1-month before my pills gets back to normal after surgery.

I would suggest that when you are both ready to go you should both be protected

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
