I know for the surgery you should not wear your jewelry and leave it at home.

And I know you need to remove your piercings the day of the surgery.

My question is, is it ALL piercings you have to take out? I know i need to take my tongue and lip ring out but what about my Industrial earring and my eye brow ring? I still have to lose weight before my record is sent for insurance approval and while im waiting i was thinking of getting some other piercings. Not any that would interfere with surgery or need to be removed ie belly ring. But i'd only get them now if i don't need to remove them during surgery.

Does anybody know? That would help me out A LOT.

Thanks in advance...

OMG. Yes. I had to take em all out. My industrial was sort of new and it healed up! Talk about mad! My other ones I've managed to get back in. I was told the equipment could arc towards metal and it would burn you wherever your piercing is. It sucks!

Could arc? whats that? And how could it burn your ear? oh and what about people who have metal plates and things? i don't but im just asking.

oh what if you change it to plastic jewelry? Could you still keep it in? My industrial is almost ten weeks old now

Arcing is kinda when a "spark" comes out of the tools and the spark stays connected from the tool over to any piece of metal, causing an arc. (Metal plates and things inside the body wouldnt be affected, i guess). That "spark" could burn you. Not sure how common. May be a precaution. I wasn't going to take the chance on some of my locations! LOL. And my industrial was about two months old. I tried to put it back the next day, and again the next day and I found the hole no prob but it was closed! So mad. I didn't think about changing to plastic. That would prob work fine!! :D

OR, AFTER my surg, doc mentioned taping over the jewelry???? Too little too late, in my case! Maybe you can ask about that?

My mom works in surgery and she has witnessed burns from arcing. It ain't pretty. On a positive note, ceramic, tungsten, and plastics won't do this.

During this, which technically isn't a true arcing, electricity is carried through your body, not the air.

Um WHAT? I'm completely freaked out now. Could you explain it again? maybe a different way? Idk.

LOL. Thanks. I knew the gist of it but didn't know it actually went through the body.

Your body runs on electricity, and is a great conductor. That is why they can "jump-start" you with a defibrillator after your heart stops. It's basically slamming 300 watts of electricity straight into your heart.

Any time doctors use electricity in surgery there is a risk of burning. This risk is small, but it happens enough that you don't want to test the theory.

I had to remove all my piercings before I went into surgery but I had my husband put them back in as soon as I got to my room. If he couldnt do it my mom was going to. I was so out of it I didn't even know he did until the next day but he did as I asked. I would ask your surgeon the next time you see him on what their policies are for piercings during surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
