10 days post op, left side pain

Recommended Posts

I had surgery 8/15 and had been doing great until the last 2 days. I am on full liquids and I haven't eaten anything that I am not supposed to. I have been walking quite a bit and have pushed myself into walking 2 miles at once at least twice a day. I have been having this sharp pain on the left side of my abdomen which is no where near the incision. It is pretty sharp and I have had to take pain killers today, which I had stopped taking at 5 days post op. is this normal? Or did I pull or tear something with all the walking? I will be calling my surgeon tomorrow morning, but wanted to see if anyone here had any ideas. Thanks!

I had the most pain on my left side also. My doctor told me it is mainly because that is where they put the largest instrument in, which is the stapler. I was told from the beginning that I would have the most pain on my left side and they were right.

Could you be constipated? I had the same problem. I had had bowel movements but evidently not enough. I took stool softeners for a few days and it helped.

If you think you are constipated try colace and crystal light! A fellow RNY uses this every day! Works great but if you are on just liquids, liquids in liquids out. All my pain is on the left side where the biggest instrument went and boy oh boy that sucker hurts. To stand to walk etc, I have to hold my hand there. Good Luck.

That's what my doctor said as well.

liquids in, liquids out......I am living proof that that is not true lol. Trust me, you CAN be constipated even though you are only having liquids. Boy was I :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
