Med1862 41 Posted August 23, 2013 Ok, here is my dilemma, My surgery is scheduled for Sept. 11th, Pre-op physical, labs, surgeon, etc.. on Sept 3rd, and I see the nutritionist next Wednesday Aug. 28th to start my 2 week pre- op diet. My surgeon wants me at 350# before surgery. Today I was 351#s on my home scale and of course at the doctors office it is always fully clothed and there is usually a 2-4 pounds different (higher) than home. I do want to have a few "last supper" meals and I planned on getting it out of my system this weekend, but I'm really contemplating if I should or not since I'm hovering so close at my needed start weight. I want to be at least were I'm at now when I see the nutritionist on Wednesday..... any advice out there???? Seems like this should not be a hard choice or big decision, but I have so many things running through my head with surgery rapidly approaching that I could you your thoughts. Eat or not eat??? music1618 879 Posted August 23, 2013 Well ask this question of yourself. Are you willing to have your surgery postponed so that you can have a few last meals? That is the bottom line for this, and it is something that only you can answer. Please though keep in mind you will be able to eventually eat everything again, but much smaller portions. Remember that this journey will challenge you in so many ways and maybe this is your first big challenge. You will have this challenge many times during your journey. I was convinced a week post op that I could advance myself and eat eggs. I threw them up violently. The important thing to remember is that you learn from your mistakes. 1 bigjimskiki reacted to this
kparadisek 115 Posted August 23, 2013 I will say that it's okay to get your last supper in but remember Portion Control. Afterall you will have to use portion control when you reintroduce those foods back into your diet. Good Luck!
JustJenn 542 Posted August 23, 2013 That's a HARD question! The fatty in me is screaming, EAT! Where the post op in me is screaming, DON'T DO IT! it will be hard if a couple pounds holds you back from the 11th and them again it could 6-12 months before you can taste these food again. Lol good luck deciding! 3 kristy3k, LeticiaHuggins and Med1862 reacted to this
Med1862 41 Posted August 23, 2013 You gals have great points....uggg.... JustJenn, yours is a hoot, but you definitely understand my situation..... I actually feel like I could eat and I know I will be under 350 by surgery date since my pre-op diet is a 700-900 calorie a day diet and very structured, but I also want to be at goal weight for both of these appointments. Maybe I should just go have a bloodymary and decide!
lisalisalisa 54 Posted August 23, 2013 Have your last hoorah and move on. Make it one last meal, not 4 if that is what you need to do. But I'll tell you this, after you have one you will want one more, and one more. No one goes into rehab sober. There will not be a meal where you say ok, I can give it all up now lol. I hated my pre op liquid diet but I have to say, I am so happy I stuck to it. The reason being, that the change in eating after surgery was way less drastic so it definitely helped to ease the transition. This close to surgery, everything you do can affect your ability to have it. Is that last pizza worth it? It's totally your call and only you can answer it. But after the last pizza you will want the last chinese food, the last ice cream, the last yada yada yada. It's a slippery slide! TxDumplin 69 Posted August 23, 2013 Did your surgeon say he "would not" operate unless you weighed a certain amount? My bet is that he would "like" to see you weigh a certain amount. For me, i only had to do liquids for two days before surgery to shrink the liver. So i'm thinking two days is all it takes to do that???...Every doctor is different though. Med1862 41 Posted August 23, 2013 My surgeon just said " I would like you to lose 15 pounds" back on my very first visit with him. He acted like he has to tell me to do something, but never said he wouldn't operate. I know this whole thing seems ridiculous, but that's what I have been thinking about. Thanks for the advice everyone, I really do appreciate it.
ponchik 77 Posted August 23, 2013 Honestly, I had few last suppers and then during preop 2 week liquid diet I lost about 15 lbs anyway. My nut was ok with me gaining few pounds once, but I am afraid you cannot blame it on Water retention:) I don't regret having my last meals at favorite places and I don't think it hurt me in any way. I see others points, but this is just my personal (humble) opinion
Med1862 41 Posted August 24, 2013 We this is not easier since its very easy to see both sides, at this point it will be game day or hour decisions this weekend. Uggg... 1 lisalisalisa reacted to this
Med1862 41 Posted August 29, 2013 Well we did go out to eat last Saturday and I had a nice lunch with my family and ate what I wanted too. I basically had my last supper day. Its was good. On Sunday I was back on track and doing good. I had my visit with the nutritionist yesterday and I weighed in at 346, so it went great. I started my pre-op diet today. Just thought I would give an update....Thanks everyone for your thoughts and input.
