Hi everyone!

I am new to the forum. I am 5'3 and weigh about 204. Dr. Miles in Birmingham seemed so sure I would get the ins to pay for my lap band. I have sleep apnea and wear a cpap. But today I found out b/c govt has declined saying my bmi was not high enough.:faint: I have a fatty liver, gerd and apnea :notagree along with my knees are giving out. Does anyone have any advise on how to help me get approved. B/c govt. started paying for the lap band in January.:heh:

Thanks,

MIMI:help:

Mimi,

I have BCBS of AZ Federal and I am 5'6" and weigh 230--my BMI is like 36. I was very worried about not being covered but once they started to cover it in January I got approved right away. I had searched through everything to build my case. Everything that I ever tried to do to lose weight I listed. I had seen a "diet" doctor for many years in Tucson and even though I didn't consistently go (if I lost weight I would go if I didn't I wouldn't go.) I really think that they saw all my attempts and for so long is what really helped. I had documentation from Medifast, Curves, and the diet doctor. The rest was just listed--Jenny Craig, Diet Center, hypnosis tapes, etc. My comorbities included GERD and low back pain. I had to go through the sleep study test but I was approved before that was ever done. BCBS has been very easy to work with. Don't give up hope!! Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
