TPN? anyone NPO on TPN

Recommended Posts

I had RNY on 6/26/13 and had emergency surgery 8/2/13. I have had nothing but complications since my RNY on 6/26. I am currently on TPN and don't know of anyone who has been in my shoes or is going through the same thing. Any reply will be greatly appreciated♥

I have ulcers all over and had them before as well we were aware of this from the EGD I was mm put on pepcid before surgery to calm things down. After my sx on 6/26 I was never the same and on 8/2 on of my ulcers that was on my new stomach ate a hole completely through my stomach. All my stomach content was spilling out into my abdomen. Due to the emergency repair of the hole, healing process and risk of this happening again in the same or different spot I can no longer eat. The doc said I will eventually get to try foods again but.have no idea when. It takes time lots l of time to get through this.

I had rny on 3/14. I had complications from a leak and ended up back in the hospital for 16 more days. 14 of those days I was NPO as well as on TPN thru my PICC line. I would never wish that on anyone. Just hang in there it gets better. I'm 6 months out in just a few weeks and down 76lbs. Things have been much better for the last three months. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I've had complications. They went in laparoscopic then had to make a incision from breast bone down pass my belly button. I was in the hosp. A week. That was 6/6/13 n I was losing about a pound a day, now last 12 days i've lost 5lb. Im not Able to exercise. I am having severe pain behind one of the right incision, every time I move. dr. said to come back if it keeps on. So i'm waiting a few more days. Very depressing.

I had surgery on 6/5/13 and two weeks later got extremely nauseated. Instead of calling my doctor I kept trying to deal with it on my own. A week later I was so sick I was in tears when I got to his office. I had gotten an ulcer in my esophagus that gave me a stricture. The doc said it was completely closed off. I was having egd's 2-3 times a week to keep reopening my esophagus. Eventually it did stay open but I had been sick so long my body kept rejecting any food or drinks. I stayed in the hospital for 9 days on tpn and came home on 4 nausea meds. I now am just using scope Patches and marinol when needed. I am down 83lbs in less than 4 months. I am having another scope on Monday though because I am having pain and burning after eating. Doc thinks I have a ulcer in my pouch this time. All I know is that eventually everything will be normal... and I still would do it all over again

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
