At <6 weeks post op I did refried Beans with cheese and sour cream, egg drop soup/soup, or baked potato. After 6 weeks I could eat essentially anything, just not much of it or anything too greasy (or else I get a tummy ache). Early on I stuck with soft meats/ flaky fish/ etc, many places you can get em blackened or broiled. Just go slow! I can't eat 1/2 of a meal out. I decided early on I was still going to order what I wanted, not get a kids meal or appetizer/side just because I couldn't eat all of a real meal. I deserve real food, if I don't eat it all, oh well! I know it's a waste, but it's my money sooooo....(drives my 6'3, 190 pound dad CRAZY!!! He'll kill himself trying to finish what's on my plate, it's hysterical)

I went out at week 4 post op I didn't really want to but it was for my brother m laws birthday. They decided to go to Olive Garden (talk about carb central) I ordered off their "light" menu most placed have some type of menu like that. I got their herb crusted salmon with steamed broccoli. I ate about 4 bites and was done I had the left overs for 2 other meals. I can't say it was an enjoyable time though. See my family eat Pasta and other things I miss so bad it actually made me grumpy and I just didn't want to be there anymore. I get its your birthday but my advice to you is try to dodge restaurants for awhile. You are going to find out going out to eat is not so much of a treat anymore.

I went out about a month post op for my mom's bday. I feel you. We went to Joe's Crab Shack but I wasn't able to have anything besides water! I had a stricture so couldn't even enjoy the lovely seafood. I watched everyone feast on lobster, shrimp, and crab legs. They were all good Protein choices but stricture prevented any solids at that time. I know you know feel- sitting there watching them feast made hate being there. I wanted to cry.

I don't have an issue eating with other people. I eat a bite or two, talk, eat a bite. I can stretch a meal out just as long as the normal folks and enjoy the company. The key (for me) is to not focus on the food but instead focus on the social aspect of the meal out. I hope you find peace with this and can eventually enjoy and evening out with the family.

My family are all such brats. The son, father, and brother all offer advice on what I should order based on what they want to mooch off my plate. I think, if I couldn't eat with my family, I'd be lost....that would be REALLY hard for me!

I am 3 months out and have been out to eat numerous times. At first I tried ordering my own food, but I can't do leftovers since surgery so I just mooch off everyone's plate. I only eat about 4 bites of food at any meal, so it isn't worth ordering my own food.

It's a real challenge going to a restaurant post-op. Most times, I stare like a blind bat at the menu not knowing what to order. I usually end up with Soup of the day, grilled chicken salad (I can only eat the chicken, rest gets played with), fruit from the salad bar, or Mac and cheese.

I'm a very cheap date these days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
