Yes my surgical team requires 5-10 percent weight-loss prior to even submitting to insurance for approval ( I am currently following the 1600 cal diet they put me on) Then 2wks. of Liquid Protein diet prior to surgery to shrink the liver and make it safer (which I'm AOK with lol). You are soooo right about proving my point! I explained to them I have lost over 100lbs 3 times in the past and that when I realized my weight was so out of control I went back to my previously successful methods and COULD NOT LOSE so I knew I had to get more drastic!!!! If I could lose my self why would I be having SURGERY :(

Exactly!!!! Ugh insurance is a pain in the ass!!! I guess I'm pretty lucky I don't have to do all of that. Humana just required a 3 month diet from my physician. And I only have to do a liquid diet 5 days before surgery. It's amazing how different everyone's insurance is!! Hang in there!! The things u r doing r awesome!! U have great will power! I'm bad because I've been eating crap!! I know I won't be able to have it anymore so I'm trying to enjoy it while I can lol

Jim,

Just think of it as a temporary setback and that the surgery will happen! I was on track for an August surgery, but now it will be October. In the grand scheme of things, just a few weeks difference from the original plans. I'm from Madison, Wisconsin.

DD,

I feel very ready. I've been preparing since January. Slowly changing habits. I track food and exercise using MyFitnessPal, I've separated liquids from food, I try to chew 30 times a bite, no sodas or caffeine, Protein first. I eat on smaller plates, limit my carbs and so on. I've stocked up on Protein Powder, blender bottles, sugar-free syrups, puddings, popsicles and instant Breakfast. I've got more than a months worth of freezer meals ready for my family. I've cleared my work schedule, told my close family and friends. Now I'm just counting down the days until Oct 2nd. I guess you now know why my family calls me the city manager. ;-) 37 days to go.

Molly

Okay, I sorta cheated. Finished all the hoops last Thursday and talked with the case manager who stated she was just getting ready to submit the papers to the insurance company. She said that they should know something in about two weeks. So today I log into my insurance company's website and checked to see if an authorization for surgery had been submitted. Sure enough it had been, still pending of course, but the surgery date the doctor's office submitted it for is 10/23/13. Hopefully, they can move it up a little. With no lapband anymore, having to work really hard to maintain the weight I lost. I'm doing it but so totally insecure without the tool on board.

Since January i have:

  1. cut out all sodas
  2. limited my carbs and when i do eat them they are whole grain if i have a choice
  3. started eating on a schedule - meals/snacks
  4. eat my Proteins first then everything else
  5. making lower fat versions of my favorite meals
  6. collecting and adapting recipes for all the stages so i wont be bored.
  7. purchased hardware(utensils and dishware) and software(protein samples, vitamins, early foods)
  8. "practice" not drinking while eating..... this isnt going so well..
  9. downloaded apps to help me remember to eat drink and meds.
  10. and finally.... my food funeral

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
